Louis Kreiner (October 23,1928 - May 24,1994) was a South African politician and Mayor of Cape Town from 1979 to 1981. His brother,Sol Kreiner subsequently held the position between 1983 and 1985. His wife,Patricia Sulcas Kreiner was also mayor of the city from 1993 to 1995. [1] [2] [3]
He was born and raised Grabouw in the Cape Province to a Jewish family. [4] His late grandfather,Eliezer had been a rabbi in Poland. [5] His father Chaim was deeply involved in the local Jewish community in Grabouw and held Shabbat services at the family home for the seven other Jewish families living in the town. [6] As a boarder,he attended Herzlia,a Jewish school in Cape Town. [7]
Kreiner was involved in efforts to increase tourism to Cape Town. He visited Taiwan,where he marketed Cape Town as a tourist destination. [8]
For Jerusalem Day in 1980,Kreiner attended celebrations at the Baxter Theatre,where he had a telephone hookup with Jerusalem mayor,Teddy Kollek. [2]

Limmud is a British-Jewish educational charity which,in the UK,produces a large annual winter festival and several other regional events throughout the year on the theme of Jewish learning. Limmud is not affiliated to any strand of Judaism,stating "We have no part to play in the debates between/across denominations" in its mission statement. Grabouw is a town located in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Grabouw is located some 65 km south-east of Cape Town,over Sir Lowry's Pass from Somerset West,along the N2 highway. The town is the commercial centre for the vast Elgin Valley,the largest single export fruit-producing area in Southern Africa,which extends between the Hottentots-Holland,Kogelberg,Groenland,and Houwhoek Mountains. The town's population has grown rapidly,with 44 593 people in 2019 from 21 593 as listed by the 2001 census.
The Gardens Shul,formally,the Cape Town Hebrew Congregation (CTHC) is a Modern Orthodox synagogue located in the Company Gardens,in the Gardens neighborhood of Cape Town. It has the oldest Jewish congregation in South Africa,dating to 1841. The congregation,known as "The Mother Synagogue of South Africa," possesses two historic structures,the 1863 synagogue known as the Old Shul and the 1905 synagogue. The South African Jewish Museum,located in its grounds,also occupies the Old Shul and is responsible for its upkeep. The 1905 building is an example of Edwardian architecture and has been called "one of the most magnificent synagogues in the world."
Bernard Moses Casper (1916–1988) was a British-South African rabbi. He was born and raised in London;educated in London and Cambridge;and served as both a Rabbi and educator in Manchester and London. He was a commissioned Chaplain in the British Army through most of the Second World War,and served with distinction as Senior Chaplain of the Jewish Infantry Brigade Group,earning a Mention in Despatches. Rabbi Sholom Rivkin was an Israeli-born American rabbi. He was the last Chief Rabbi of St. Louis,Missouri,and the last chief rabbi of one of only a few cities in the United States that has ever had a chief rabbi. He held the post of Chief Rabbi from 1983 until 2005 and was Chief Rabbi Emeritus until his death in 2011. He was also a chief judge on the Beth Din of the Rabbinical Council of America,and head of the Vaad Hoeir of St. Louis,the governing body of the St. Louis Orthodox Jewish community. Temple Israel is the oldest of eleven Progressive synagogues in South Africa. It is a provincial heritage site,built in the Art Deco style by architect Hermann Kallenbach. It is located in the Johannesburg suburb of Hillbrow. It is an affiliate of the South African Union for Progressive Judaism (SAUPJ),which is part of the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ).

Rabbi Moses Cyrus Weiler,a founder of Reform Judaism in the country,led the country's first Reform synagogue,Temple Israel in Hillbrow,Johannesburg. Weiler is credited with growing the movement,to represent 15-17% of South African Jewry and establishing 25 congregations in the country. A 2020 joint study by the Institute for Jewish Policy Research and the University of Cape Town showed that 12% of Jews identified as Progressive and that in relative terms the progressive strands are increasing after falling to 7% in 1998 and 2005 studies. In Johannesburg,the community accounts for 7% of the city's Jewry,rising to 18% in Cape Town and 25% in Durban.
Temple Israel,also known as the Cape Town Progressive Jewish Congregation (CTPJC),is a Progressive Jewish congregation in Cape Town,with three centres in Green Point,Wynberg and Milnerton. As three centres combined,they are the largest Progressive congregation in South Africa,and the second largest Jewish congregation in Cape Town after Marais Road Shul in Sea Point. The congregation first started in Green Point in 1944,eight years after South Africa's first progressive synagogue,also Temple Israel,opened in Hillbrow in Johannesburg. The Cape Town congregation caters to over 3000 Progressive Jews in the city. The congregation is an affiliate of the South African Union for Progressive Judaism,which is part of the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ). The congregation represents around 18% of Cape Town Jewry.
Moses Cyrus Weiler was a Latvian-born South African rabbi and founder of Reform Judaism in the country. He was Chief Minister of the United Jewish Progressive Congregation and served as rabbi of Temple Israel in Hillbrow,Johannesburg,the mother synagogue of the country's Reform movement. He is credited with growing the movement,with 25 congregations established during his tenure. He made aliyah to Israel in 1958,where he spent the second part of his life.
Arthur Saul Super was a British-born rabbi and journalist. He initially served as a rabbi to Orthodox congregations before switching allegiances to Reform Judaism. He served as Chief Minister of the United Jewish Progressive Congregations of Johannesburg between 1964 and 1975.
The Marais Road Shul,formally,the Green &Sea Point Hebrew Congregation (G&SPHC) is a notable Modern Orthodox synagogue in Sea Point,a seaside suburb of Cape Town. The congregation was first established in 1926,and the synagogue was completed in 1934. It had initially intended to become a branch of the Gardens Shul in the City Bowl,but opted for independence,and became the larger of the two. It is the largest Jewish congregation in South Africa,and by 1994,it had become the largest in the South Hemisphere. The Sephardi Hebrew Congregation,established in 1960,also operates a shul from the G&SPHC's Weizmann Hall on Regent Road in Sea Point.
Sol Kreiner is a retired South African politician that served as Mayor of Cape Town between 1983 and 1985. At the time of his inauguration,he was the city's second-youngest mayor. His late brother,Louis Kreiner (1928–1994) also served as Mayor of Cape Town between 1979 and 1981. His sister-in-law,Patricia Sulcas Kreiner subsequently served as mayor from 1993 to 1995.
Patricia Sulcas Kreiner is the former Mayor of Cape Town,she served from 1993 to 1995,during the country's transition from white-minority rule to a multi-racial democracy. She became the second woman to hold the position after Joyce Newton-Thompson. She also became the first Jewish woman to hold the position. Her late husband Louis Kreiner previously held the position from 1979 to 1981,followed by her brother-in-law,Sol Kreiner,serving as mayor from 1983 to 1985.
