Star catalogue Astronomical catalogue that lists stars and their positions in the sky

A star catalogue is an astronomical catalogue that lists stars. In astronomy, many stars are referred to simply by catalogue numbers. There are a great many different star catalogues which have been produced for different purposes over the years, and this article covers only some of the more frequently quoted ones. Star catalogues were compiled by many different ancient people, including the Babylonians, Greeks, Chinese, Persians, and Arabs. They were sometimes accompanied by a star chart for illustration. Most modern catalogues are available in electronic format and can be freely downloaded from space agencies' data centres. The largest is being compiled from the spacecraft Gaia and thus far has over a billion stars.

Luyten's Star (GJ 273) is a red dwarf in the constellation Canis Minor located at a distance of 12.35 light-years from the Sun. It has a visual magnitude of 9.9, making it too faint to be viewed with the unaided eye. It is named after Willem Jacob Luyten, who, in collaboration with Edwin G. Ebbighausen, first determined its high proper motion in 1935. The star has two confirmed planets and two candidate planets, of which Luyten b is in the circumstellar habitable zone.

Gliese 65, also known as Luyten 726-8, is a binary star system that is one of Earth's nearest neighbors, at 8.8 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cetus. The two component stars are both flare stars with the variable star designations BL Ceti and UV Ceti.

EZ Aquarii Star in the constellation Aquarius

EZ Aquarii is a triple star system 11.1 light-years from the Sun in the constellation Aquarius within the Milky Way. It is also known as Luyten 789-6, Gliese 866 and LHS 68. It is a variable star showing flares as well as smaller brightness changes due to rotation. The aggregate mass of the system is 0.3262±0.0018 solar masses. All three seem to have masses close to the hydrogen burning mass limit.

HD 114386 is a star with a pair of orbiting exoplanets in the southern constellation of Centaurus. It has an apparent visual magnitude of 8.73, which means it cannot be viewed with the naked eye but can be seen with a telescope or good binoculars. Based on parallax measurements, the system is located at a distance of 91 light years from the Sun. It is receding with a radial velocity of 33.4 km/s. The star shows a high proper motion, traversing the celestial sphere at an angular rate of 0.318 arcsec yr−1.

GJ 3323 is a nearby single star located in the equatorial constellation Eridanus, about 0.4° to the northwest of the naked eye star Psi Eridani. It is invisible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude 12.20. Parallax measurements give a distance estimate of 17.5 light-years from the Sun. It is drifting further away with a radial velocity of +42.3 km/s. Roughly 104,000 years ago, the star is believed to have come to within 7.34 ± 0.16 light-years of the Solar System.

LP 816-60 is a single red dwarf star of spectral type M4, located in constellation Capricornus at 18.6 light-years from Earth.

Gliese 693 is a red dwarf star and a flare star of spectral type M2 located in the constellation Pavo, 18.95 light-years from Earth.

Gliese 588 is a nearby red dwarf star of spectral type M2.5, located in the constellation Lupus at 19.30 light-years from Earth. It emits a very stable light flux, with no detectable pulsations.

Luyten b is a confirmed exoplanet, likely rocky, orbiting within the habitable zone of the nearby red dwarf Luyten's Star. It is the fourth-closest potentially habitable exoplanet known, at a distance of 12 light-years. Only Proxima Centauri b, Ross 128 b, and GJ 1061 d are closer. Discovered alongside Gliese 273c in June 2017, Luyten b is a super-Earth of around 2.89 times the mass of Earth and receives only 6% more starlight than Earth, making it one of the best candidates for habitability.
