An actuary is a professional with advanced mathematical skills who deals with the measurement and management of risk and uncertainty. The name of the corresponding field is actuarial science which covers rigorous mathematical calculations in areas of life expectancy and life insurance. These risks can affect both sides of the balance sheet and require asset management, liability management, and valuation skills. Actuaries provide assessments of financial security systems, with a focus on their complexity, their mathematics, and their mechanisms.
Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) is a public university in East Anglia, United Kingdom. Its origins are in the Cambridge School of Art (CSA), founded by William John Beamont, a Fellow of Trinity College at University of Cambridge, in 1858. It became a university in 1992, and was renamed after John Ruskin, the Oxford University professor and author, in 2005. Ruskin gave the inauguration speech of the Cambridge School of Art in 1858. Marie Corinne Lyne Le Quéré is a Canadian scientist. She is Royal Society Research Professor of Climate Change Science at the University of East Anglia and former Director of Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. She is the chair of the French High Council on Climate and member of the UK Climate Change Committee. Her research focuses on the interactions between the carbon cycle and climate change.
Dorothy Beatrice Spiers was a British actuary. She was one of two women to be the first to qualify as an actuary in the United Kingdom (UK). After studying mathematics at Newnham College, Cambridge, she worked for the Guardian Assurance Company. She passed the actuarial exams at the Institute of Actuaries in 1923 with Gladys Gregory.
Marjorie Ngwenya is a British-born, Zimbabwean-raised actuary. In June 2016, she was appointed president-elect of UK’s Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA). She was the first black African, the youngest and third woman to hold this position. She was also known to be the first leader based outside the United Kingdom.
Monica Christine Allanach was a British actuary. She was the first woman to be elected to the Council of the Institute of Actuaries.
