Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli, commonly referred to as Napoli, is an Italian professional football club based in the city of Naples that plays in Serie A, the top flight of Italian football. Napoli has won three Serie A titles, six Coppa Italia titles, two Supercoppa Italiana titles, and one UEFA Cup. The club was formed in 1926 as Associazione Calcio Napoli following the merger of U.S. Internazionale Napoli and Naples Foot-Ball Club. Napoli saw relatively little success in its early years, winning their first major trophy in the 1962 Coppa Italia. Napoli then saw increased success in the late 1970s and especially in the 1980s, after the club acquired Diego Maradona in 1984. During his time in Naples, Maradona helped the team win several trophies, which led to the club retiring his number 10 jersey. During this period, Napoli won two league titles, the 1987 Coppa Italia, the 1990 Supercoppa Italiana, and their only European trophy with the 1989 UEFA Cup. Following his departure, however, Napoli struggled financially, and endured several relegations and a bankruptcy, prior to being re-founded in 2004 by film producer Aurelio De Laurentiis. Under his leadership, the club has stabilized, which has led to renewed on-field success, winning 2005–06 Serie C1, the 2012, 2014, and 2020 Coppa Italia titles, and the 2014 Supercoppa Italiana, eventually culminating in their third league title in 2023, the first since Maradona's departure.

The 1989–90 Serie A season was another successful year for Napoli, with Diego Maradona being among the leading goalscorers in Serie A, behind Marco van Basten of Milan and Roberto Baggio of Fiorentina. But while Baggio's Fiorentina narrowly avoided relegation, Maradona's Napoli won their second Serie A title in four seasons, while Van Basten helped Milan retain the European Cup as compensation for their failure to win the Serie A title, having finished two points behind Napoli. Demoted to Serie B for 1990–91 were Udinese, Hellas Verona, Cremonese and Ascoli. In Europe, Sampdoria won the Cup Winners Cup and Juventus the UEFA Cup, making this year the most successful in Italian football history.
Rino Marchesi is a former Italian football midfielder and manager from San Giuliano Milanese.
Lorenzo Insigne is an Italian professional footballer who plays as a winger for Major League Soccer club Toronto FC and the Italy national team.
S.S.C. Napoli once again struggled to reach the levels it had achieved previously, but still finished sixth in Serie A, which ended up with coach Marcello Lippi joining Juventus. Financial woes caused Napoli to sell its two prominent foreign players, Jonas Thern and Daniel Fonseca to Roma following the season's end.Skipper Ciro Ferrara also left, in his case for Juventus.
S.S.C. Napoli improved by three positions following the arrival of Diego Maradona at the club. The new #10 had been bought from FC Barcelona on a World record transfer fee, and he fulfilled expectations with 14 goals in his debut season, making him the third best scorer in the entire league. The teams' league performance, however, was only average, ending up eight of out 16 teams. The previous season had almost resulted in relegation, so Maradona's arrival certainly boosted the team well before its two scudetti.
U.C. Sampdoria started its march towards an eventual Serie A championship and European Cup final with its appointment of Yugoslav coach Vujadin Boškov. With Britons Graeme Souness and Trevor Francis leaving the squad, Boškov built his team around young Italian players, with Roberto Mancini, Gianluca Vialli, Pietro Vierchowod and Moreno Mannini among the bulwark of the squad as Sampdoria finished 6th in a tight battle involving several teams for 3rd in the championship.
