Luciano Micallef is a Maltese abstract artist. He is one of the most famous artists in Malta for abstract art and has multiple paintings all over the island. [1]

Early life

He was born in Birkirkara, Malta on 1 November 1954. [2] At age 10, he started studying art privately under Maltese artist Guzeppi Briffa, [2] He later attended the Malta School of Art. [2] He was awarded a scholarship by the Italian government to study art at the Accademia di Belli Arti di Firenze. [3] He is considered a prominent Maltese artist of the 20th Century through his abstract art. [4]

Works

Art

In 1991 he exhibited his first selection of abstract paintings in the Contemporary Hall, National Museum of Fine Arts, Malta whilst also exhibiting as part of a collective within the same Museum but in two other locations, those of the Salon, Auberge de Provence and Ex Preti Rooms, Auberge de Provence, Malta. [5]

In 2010 he was commissioned to create three large works in fused glass for the Church of Divine Mercy in San Pawl tat-targa, Malta. [6]

Micallef has exhibited both in Malta and Overseas on numerous occasions. [7] His exhibition space, Gallery 5 in 1996 is where he holds regular exhibitions of his works. [8]

Micallef is known for his portrayals of leading personalities through his portraiture. [9] He has portrayed Architect Renzo Piano, [10] Roberto Benigni, [11] Luciano Benetton and Gilberto Benetton, [12] Ornella Muti, [13] and Maltese politicians such as Eddie Fenech Adami [14] and Ugo Mifsud Bonnici.

Stamp design

Between 1984 and 1996 he was commissioned by the Government of Malta to create designs for Maltese stamps. [15] In 1984 he created designs to commemorate the 1984 Olympic Games held in the US, a set of Christmas stamps and designs to commemorate the 10th Anniversity of the Republic of Malta. [16] In 1985 he designed collections to commemorate Europa - European Music Year and The 76th Anniversary of the Uprising 7 July 1919. [17] In 1986, he designed a range of stamps in honour of Malta's leading philanthropists and the 1986 Traditional collection of Christmas Stamps. Every year from 1986 to 1991 he designed a set of stamps featuring historic Maltese uniforms. [18] In 1993 saw the launch of a set of stamps depicting Scouts. He designed a set of stamps to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the modern Olympic Games that took place in 1996. [19]

Graphic design and printmaking

In the early years of his career he was involved in printmaking, mainly etching and screen printing. He studied engraving at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Perugia.

Micallef has created packaging designs, [20] book covers and event posters for Unesco and other organisations. [21] [22] His paintings have been featured on phone cards and credit cards of banks and telecommunication companies. [23]

Publications

The University of Malta published a book about his works in 1993 edited by Maltese philosopher Kenneth Wain entitled 'Luciano Micallef - A Study'. [24]

Another book about Micallef's art entitled Abstracts was launched in 2006. [25]

Over a long span of years he has collaborated with Poet Victor Fenech to create illustrations for poem/prose publications such as F'Altamira [26] and Sangraal [27] with its critical studies by Oliver Friggieri and Lovesongfifty. [28]

In 2006 the Bank of Valletta presented a retrospective exhibition featuring 65 works of art from over thirty years of his career. A book entitled Luciano Micallef was published in conjunction with the event. [29] [30]

In 2019, an illustrated book by Luciano entitled Journey was published with past poems by Victor Fenech. [31]

Oliver Friggieri was a Maltese poet, novelist, literary critic, and philosopher. He led the establishment of literary history and criticism in Maltese while teaching at the University of Malta, studying the works of Dun Karm, Rużar Briffa, and others. A prolific writer himself, Friggieri explored new genres to advocate the Maltese language, writing the libretti for the first oratorio and the first cantata in Maltese. His work aimed to promote the Maltese cultural identity, while not shying from criticism: one of his most famous novels, Fil-Parlament Ma Jikbrux Fjuri, attacked the tribalistic divisions of society caused by politics. From philosophy, he was mostly interested in epistemology and existentialism.

The designers of Maltese stamps have been creating their works for the last 150 years. The most prolific designer of Maltese stamps was Emvin Cremona, who designed most of Malta's stamps from the late 1950s to the 1970s. Dates indicate the years stamps with the artist's design were used.

Mużika Mużika is the national song festival of Malta.

Emanuel Vincent "Emvin" Cremona was a Maltese artist and stamp designer. He is regarded as one of the best Maltese artists of the 20th century. Cremona is known for designing most Maltese stamps from 1957 to the 1980s, including the stamp issue commemorating Malta's independence from Great Britain in 1964. He studied at the Malta School of Arts and the Regia Accademia delle Belle Arti in Rome. Some of his works can be found at the parish churches of Msida and Ħamrun, Ta' Pinu Sanctuary and the Chapel of the Malta International Airport. The World Health Organization headquarters in Geneva and the United Nations Headquarters in New York also house paintings by Cremona.

The Malta Postal Museum is a postal museum in Valletta, Malta. It is run by the postal operator MaltaPost, and it was inaugurated on 17 June 2016. Andrew Micallef is a Maltese painter and musician. He is known for his highly detailed paintings of Maltese flora and fauna, landscapes, seascapes and architecture. He has held numerous solo exhibitions, and has also illustrated books and designed stamps. He is also a professional chromatic button accordion player.

Mark Camilleri M.Q.R is a Maltese historian, writer, blogger, and publisher. Camilleri served as chairman of the National Book Council from 2013 to 2021. Following this, he became an outspoken critic of the ruling Labour Party and of prime ministers Joseph Muscat and Robert Abela.

Helen and Joseph was a Maltese singing duo consisting of Joe Cutajar and Helen Micallef, best known for their participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 1972, held in Edinburgh, Scotland.
