Geraint Owen Jones is a former English cricketer who played for both England and Papua New Guinea. Born to Welsh parents in Papua New Guinea. From 2004 until 2006 he was the first-choice wicketkeeper for England in both Test and One-day cricket, but subsequently fell behind Chris Read, Paul Nixon, Matt Prior and Tim Ambrose. He later played international cricket for Papua New Guinea from 2012 to 2014. He announced his retirement from first-class cricket on 8 July 2015 following his resignation as the first-class cricket captain of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club. On 26 April 2019, at the final World Cricket League 2 fixture; PNG defeated Oman to finish at the fourth position and reclaim their ODI status.

The 2015–17 ICC Intercontinental Cup was the seventh edition of the ICC Intercontinental Cup, an international first-class cricket tournament between leading associate members of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The tournament took place during 2015 to 2017. It ran in parallel with the 2015–17 ICC World Cricket League Championship, but with slightly different teams. As Ireland and Afghanistan had qualified for the ICC One Day International Championship ranking qualification process, they were replaced by Kenya and Nepal in the limited over event; however they continued to play the four-day event.

The 2019 ICC World Cricket League Division Two was an international cricket tournament that took place in April 2019 in Namibia. It was contested between six teams; Canada, Hong Kong, Oman, Papua New Guinea, the United States and tournament hosts Namibia. It formed part of the 2017–19 cycle of the World Cricket League (WCL) which determined the qualification for the 2023 Cricket World Cup. The final and third-place playoff match were granted One Day International (ODI) status by the International Cricket Council. Namibia won the tournament, after they beat Oman by 145 runs in the final. It was Namibia's first win in an ODI match, and it was the first ever ODI match played by Oman.
Simon Atai is a Papua New Guinean cricketer. In December 2017, he was named in Papua New Guinea's squad for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He was the leading run-scorer for Papua New Guinea in the tournament, with 116 runs in six matches.
