Lust for Life follows the romantic entanglements and comedic misunderstandings that arise when Johannes Düsedau, a young man with romantic aspirations, becomes involved with two very different women. The story centers around the charismatic Mabel Ray, an American performer who brings excitement and unpredictability into Johannes's orderly German life, and Inge Wendhusen, the daughter of a respectable consul who represents more traditional romantic expectations.
The plot unfolds as Johannes finds himself torn between his attraction to the vivacious Mabel, whose free-spirited American ways challenge conventional social norms, and his more practical relationship with the well-connected Inge. Complications arise when family obligations and social expectations clash with personal desires, creating the comedic situations typical of the romantic comedy genre.
