Lynn E. Kessler (born February 26,1941) is an American politician who served as a member of the Washington House of Representatives,representing the 24th district from 1993 to 2011. [1] A member of the Democratic Party,she served as the House Majority Leader from 1999 to 2010. [2]
She also served on the Washington State Fine Arts Commission and the National Association of State Arts Agencies (NASAA). She is a former small-business owner and executive director of the United Way of Grays Harbor.
Lynn Kessler,was recognized in 2010 as the National Legislator of the Year (Excellence in Legislative Leadership) by the National Council of State Legislatures.http://www.ncsl.org/ Additionally,Kessler was recognized as one of the top 100 legislators in the nation.
In early 2010,Kessler announced her retirement,telling House members that she would not run for re-election in the fall. As one of WA Legislature's top lawmakers,she has been in the Legislature for 18 years and served in the majority leadership team for about a decade. As a majority leader,Kessler was the second-ranking Democrat in the state House.
Kessler has been a leader on open government issues in the Legislature. She served on the state's "Sunshine Committee," examining state open-government policies.
She and her husband Keith are the parents of four and the grandparents of Kyle,Ryan and Arita. They live in Hoquiam.

Harriette L. Angela Z. Monson defeated incumbent Kirk Humphreys,a former Oklahoma City mayor,for the school board chairman's position in 2009,serving until 2013.
Women have served in state legislatures in the United States since 1895. Their ranks have increased with the advent of nationwide women's suffrage after 1920. Although the number of women serving in state legislatures has more than quintupled since 1971,they remain underrepresented. In 2023,women held less than half of the seats in state legislatures across the majority of states. Specifically,seven states —Oklahoma (19.2%),Louisiana (19.4%),Alabama (17.4%),South Carolina (14.8%),Mississippi (14.5%),Tennessee (14.4%),and West Virginia (11.9%)—had legislatures where women occupied less than 20% of the seats.
As of 2022,Montana ranked 22nd out of 50 American states in terms of percentage of state legislators who are women. Within the Montana State Legislature,32.7 percent of all members were women in 2022. From statehood in 1889 to 2024,the state of Montana had only one female governor,Judy Martz. Although the first woman to be elected to the United States Congress was from Montana in 1916,the state had not elected another woman to Congress as of 2021.
