The Lyran illuminating mortar is a 71mm mortar designed by Bofors Weapon Systems primarily for armoured vehicles to fire flares to illuminate battlefields and targets. It can also be used as an infantry weapon and in marine applications.
In October 1964 the Swedish Arms manufacturer Bofors AB (now part of BAE Systems) filed an application with the United States Patent Office for a modular lightweight mortar whereby the major components were interchangeable between man-portable use and for attachment to armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs). [1] In April 1966 Bofors filed a further patent application for a lightweight illumination mortar shell. [2]
While the concept of providing battlefield illumination using flares fired from mortars was not new, Bofors' designs for a lightweight modular system - especially one that was limited to only fire illumination rounds - was, and led to the production of the Lyran 71mm Illuminating Mortar. The system was subsequently installed on a wide range of AFVs operated by NATO and other European armies. [3] [4] [5]
Lyran makes extensive use of plastic-based materials and the system shares a number of common components between the standard infantry/man-portable version and the vehicle-mounted version. [6]
The system is designed so that the ammunition cases can act as the mortar base plate. The mortar flare shells are in individual plastic containers which can be connected together with the upper container in a pack having a carrying handle. The mortar flare shell comprises a front body section, rear body section and a tail unit. The front body section contains the fuse, delayed pyrotechnical charge, separating charge and the flare charge. The flare charge is ignited by the separating charge that is initiated by a primer pellet. The rear body section contains a parachute which is attached to the flare charge and a propellant charge. The vehicle-mounted version consists of the launcher which are normally mounted in pairs on the rear of the vehicle or its turret. There is a control unit with firing buttons for two launchers and a connection cable which is attached to the vehicle's electrical bus. Required power supply is 24V DC. Launchers can be detached from vehicles and fitted to a baseplate and be used as an infantry weapon.
The system has been designed to operate within the temperature variations from an extreme Arctic winter (-40 °C) to a hot European summer and above (+60 °C).
For the vehicle-mounted version, firing is initiated via the control unit which is located in the crew compartment of the vehicle.
In addition to the safe position on the fuse, each mortar flare has settings for 400, 800 and 1,300 metres range with the launcher set at an elevation of 45°. The elevation of the launcher can be varied in increments of 5°. A longer barrel is available for the launcher which increases firing distances to 450, 950 and 1,600 m respectively. [7]
Luminous spirit levels are mounted on the launcher to assist setting the elevation at night.

The Lyran system is limited in its current applications, primarily fitted to the CV90 series of combat vehicles. However, this vehicle is in service in significant numbers with the Danish, Estonian, Finnish, Netherlands, Norwegian and Swedish armies, and is also being consider by other European armies. [4] [5] [8] The system was fitted to the AIFV as used the Belgian army. [3] This vehicle was also used by the Netherlands (where it was known as the YPR-765) and small numbers may have been fitted with the Lyran; however this vehicle has been phased out service (replaced by the CV90) but units have been resold to other countries.
The Lyran is no longer fitted to CV90 vehicles. [9]

In 1990 the journal Shipbuilding Technology International published an article whereby the authors proposed that the Lyran mortar could be utilised within the maritime industry, especially for maritime law enforcement in the prevention of pollution and illegal dumping, smuggling interdiction and for rescue work. [13] It has since been adopted by the German Coast Guard.
Bofors Weapon Systems, the division within Bofors AB that developed the Lyran system previously announced it was developing an infrared (IR) illuminating composite shell for the Lyran, but following the purchase of Bofors AB by Saab AB in 1999, there were no further announcements by the new company, Saab Bofors Dynamics, as to this proposed development.
In September 2000 United Defence Industries (UDI) purchased Bofors Weapons Systems from Saab Bofors Dynamics. Saab have since reorganised and responsibility for their land weapons systems now resides with the division (Saab) Dynamics, and as at February 2020 the product no longer appears on that company's website. [14] In 2005 BAE Systems acquired UDI, now the parent company of Bofors Weapon Systems, to form BAE Systems Bofors AB, with a division Weapon Systems Sweden (Bofors), and as at February 2020 the product no longer appears on that company's website. In 2004 BAE Systems acquired Hägglunds Vehicle AB, the designer of the CV90, to become BAE Systems Hägglunds AB and now market this vehicle. In February 2018 BAE Systems announced the latest version of the CV90, the Mark IV, and product literature no longer mentions the Lyran mortar, and in photos this no longer appears where it was previously mounted on the rear of the turret. It, therefore, seems that the Lyran mortar is now an obsolete system (in military use) and is no longer fitted to current combat vehicles.

The Carl Gustaf 84 mm recoilless rifle is a lightweight, low-cost weapon that uses a wide range of ammunition, which makes it extremely flexible and suitable for a wide variety of roles.
AMOS or Advanced Mortar System is a Finno-Swedish 120 mm semi-automatic twin barrelled, breech loaded mortar turret. AMOS has been fitted to a wide range of armoured vehicles, such as the Sisu Pasi, Patria AMV and Combat Vehicle 90. The Swedish Navy originally planned to fit AMOS to the CB90 assault craft, but found that it was too small to carry it. Instead, a project to develop the larger Combat Boat 2010 was launched specifically to carry AMOS. Sweden cancelled its acquisition of the AMOS in 2009 due to budget regulations by recommendations from Genomförandegruppen. In 2016 a new self propelled mortar system called Mjölner based on a CV90 hull was ordered by the Swedish armed forces, it is based on the AMOS and has many visual similarities but is not as advanced.

The Saab Bofors Dynamics NLAW, also known as the MBT LAW or RB 57, is a fire-and-forget, lightweight shoulder-fired, and disposable (single-use) line of sight (LOS) missile system, designed for infantry use. The missile uses a soft-launch system and is guided by predicted line of sight (PLOS). It can carry out an overfly top attack (OTA) on an armoured vehicle, or a direct attack (DA) on structures and non-armoured vehicles.
The Soltam K6 is a 120 mm mortar that was developed by Soltam Systems of Israel. It is the long-range version of the Soltam K5 and has replaced older systems, such as the 107-millimetre (4.2 in) M30, in several armies, including the United States Army. It is much lighter than the M30, has a greater range, and can sustain a rate of fire of four rounds per minute, while the M30 could sustain only three.

The infanterikanonvagn 91, lit. 'infantry cannon wagon 91', was a high mobility assault gun that was developed to meet the operational requirements of the Swedish Army. It was designed and manufactured by Hägglund & Söner and employed common components with the Pbv 302 armoured personnel carrier series. The first prototypes of the ikv 91 were completed in 1969 with production running from 1975 until 1978. In total, 212 were manufactured.

The Bofors 57 mm Naval Automatic Gun L/70, among other names, is a series of dual-purpose naval guns designed and produced by the Swedish arms manufacturer AB Bofors, designed in the late 1960s as a replacement design for the twin barreled Bofors 57 mm Naval Automatic Gun L/60. The gun is remotely controlled by a fire-control computer but can as a redundancy measure also be operated manually by crew using instrument panels either on or in direct contact with the gun.
The AT4 is a Swedish 84 mm (3.31 in) unguided, man-portable, disposable, shoulder-fired recoilless anti-tank weapon manufactured by Saab Bofors Dynamics. The AT4 is not a rocket launcher strictly speaking, because the explosive warhead is not propelled by a rocket motor. Rather, it is a smooth-bore recoilless gun. Saab has had considerable sales success with the AT4, making it one of the most common light anti-tank weapons in the world. The M136 AT4 and M136A1 AT4CS-RS are the variants used by the United States Army.
The BONUS or ACED is a 155 mm guided artillery cluster round co-developed and manufactured by Bofors of Sweden and Nexter of France. It was designed to fulfill a long range, indirect fire, top attack requirement against armoured fighting vehicles.
The Bofors 40 mm Automatic Gun L/70,, is a multi-purpose autocannon developed by the Swedish arms manufacturer AB Bofors during the second half of the 1940s as a modern replacement for their extremely successful World War II-era Bofors 40 mm L/60 gun-design. It was initially intended as a dedicated anti-aircraft weapon, being sold as Bofors 40 mm Automatic A.A. Gun L/70, but has since its conception been redeveloped into a dedicated multi-purpose weapon capable of firing both sabot projectiles and programmable ammunition. The Bofors 40 mm L/70 design never achieved the same popularity and historical status as the original L/60 design but has still seen great export and popularity to this day, having been adopted by around 40 different nations and even being accepted as NATO-standard in November 1953. It is still being produced and sold, and several variants exist for both field and naval applications. A notable variant is the Bofors 40/70B "light armored vehicle variant" which is in use on the Swedish Strf 9040 and Korean K21 infantry fighting vehicles.
