MP banki was an investment bank in Iceland that operated from 2003 until 2015 when it became part of Kvika Banki. [1]

History

The company was founded as MP Securities (Icelandic: MP Verðbréf hf) in 1999 [2] [3] by Margeir Pétursson [3] together with Sverrir Kristinsson and Ágústi Sindra Karlsson. [ citation needed ] They owned 10% each, while Margeir 80% shares.

The bank received an investment banking license in 2003 and started to offered a comprehensive investment banking service. After the bank was licensed as an investment bank the name changed to MP Investment Bank (Icelandic: MP Fjárfestingarbanki hf).

In 2008, the bank received a commercial banking license and changed its name to MP banki. [3] It became the only commercial bank in Iceland that did not collapse that year when the worldwide economic crisis hit the country. [3]

MP banki and Straumur Investment Bank merged in July 2015 and the name changed to Kvika banki. [1]

Scott Brison Canadian politician

Scott A. Brison is a Canadian former politician from Nova Scotia. Brison served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the riding of Kings-Hants from the 1997 federal election until July 2000, then from November 2000 to February 2019. Brison was originally elected as a Progressive Conservative but crossed the floor to join the Liberal Party in 2003. He served as the Minister of Public Works and Government Services from 2004 until 2006 in the Paul Martin government. He was President of the Treasury Board of Canada in Justin Trudeau's ministry until January 2019.

Full-reserve banking

Full-reserve banking is a proposed alternative to fractional-reserve banking in which banks would be required to keep the full amount of each depositor's funds in cash, ready for immediate withdrawal on demand. Funds deposited by customers in demand deposit accounts would not be loaned out by the bank because it would be legally required to retain the full deposit to satisfy potential demand for payments. Proposals for such systems generally do not place such restrictions on deposits that are not payable on demand, for example time deposits.

Íslandsbanki Bank of Iceland

Íslandsbanki is an Icelandic bank with roots tracing back to 1884, formerly being the domestic part of Glitnir banki hf., but on 15 October 2008 being split from the bankrupt Glitnir and reestablished into a new independent bank. The sole operations of the bank is to manage a branch network in Iceland, with a 20%-40% market share across all domestic franchise areas. As of 2017, the bank has 14 branches around Iceland. The Nasdaq Iceland, formerly known as the Iceland Stock Exchange (XICE), is a stock exchange located in Iceland. It was established in 1985 as a joint venture of several banks and brokerage firms on the initiative of the central bank. Trading began in 1986 in Icelandic government bonds, and trading in equities began in 1991. Equities trading increased rapidly thereafter. A wide variety of firms are currently listed on the exchange, including firms in retail, fishing, transportation, banks, insurance and numerous other areas. Because of the small size of the Icelandic economy and the low cost of public listing, many of the companies traded on the XICE are relatively small and are relatively illiquid.

Kaupthing Bank was a major international Icelandic bank, headquartered in Reykjavík, Iceland. It was taken over by the Icelandic government during the 2008–2011 Icelandic financial crisis and the domestic Icelandic based operations were spun into a new bank New Kaupthing, which was subsequently renamed Arion Banki. All the non-Icelandic assets and debts remained with the now defunct Kaupthing Bank. Prior to its collapse it also allegedly loaned money to various parties with the purpose of buying Kaupthing shares.

The bank operates in the Greater Reykjavík area as well as in the largest urban areas around the country. In 2016 the bank had the third largest market share of the current accounts in Iceland (30%), behind Landsbankinn (36.1%) and Íslandsbanki (31%). The Bank has 21 branches all over the country and over 100,000 customers.

Rossiysky Kredit was a Russian commercial bank that ceased operations on 24 July 2015, when the Central Bank of Russia withdrew the bank's license.

Margeir Pétursson Icelandic banker and chess player

Margeir Pétursson is an Icelandic banker and chess grandmaster. He founded MP Bank in 1999, and has owned Bank Lviv since 2006. He was Icelandic Chess Champion in 1986 and 1987, and Nordic Chess Champion in 1987.
