Mājuli or Majuli is a river island in the Brahmaputra River, Assam and in 2016, it became the first island to be made a district in India. In the 1790s, the island covered an area of 1,300 km2 (500 sq mi). It had an area of 1,255 square kilometres (485 sq mi) at the beginning of the 20th century, but having lost significantly to erosion it covers 352 square kilometres (136 sq mi) as at 2014. Sarbananda Sonowal is an Indian politician of Bharatiya Janata Party from Assam who is serving as the current Cabinet Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Cabinet Minister of AYUSH, Government of India and the member of the Rajya Sabha representing Assam since 2021and also a member of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs since 2021. He is the 14th Chief Minister of Assam from 2016 to 2021 and the former of Assam Legislative Assembly from Majuli from 2016 until he resigned in 2021 and from Moran constituency from 2001 to 2004. Sonowal earlier served as the Assam state unit President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from 2012 to 2014 and again from 2015 to 2016. He has also served as the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of India, from 2014 to 2016 and the Minister of State for Entrepreneurship and Skill Development from 2014 to 2014 and the member of the Lok Sabha from Lakhimpur from 2014 to 2016 and from Dibrugarh from 2004 to 2009. He was also the member of the Asom Gana Parishad from 2001 to 2011.

Miri or Mising, also known as Plains Miri, is a Tani language spoken by the Mising people. There are 629,954 speakers, who inhabit mostly the Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Sibsagar, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, Tinsukia districts of Assam and also some parts of Arunachal Pradesh. The primary literary body of Mising is known as 'Mising Agom Kébang '.

Ujoni Majuli is the upper part of Majuli, Assam. It is also called Upper Majuli.

Pub Majuli College, established in 1990, is a general degree college situated at Bongaon, in Majuli district, Assam. This college is affiliated with the Dibrugarh University. This college offers bachelor's degree courses in arts.

Majuli University of Culture is a state government university located in Majuli, Assam dedicated for research, teaching and education in the field of humanities and performing arts. The university is established by Majuli University of Culture Bill, 2017 which was passed by the Government of Assam on 7 September 2017. Recently, the Government of Assam announced that the University will be upgraded to a full fledged University having Humanities, Commerce and Science disciplines apart from the Cultural and Performing Arts part catering to the need of the common people of Majuli District and rest of the state in sync with the New Education Policy. The new name as proposed for the University is Majuli University. The necessary Act modification process is underway. On 13 July 2018 Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone for the state's first cultural university at Majuli to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 300 crore.

The Tuni River is a small tributary of the Brahmaputra River in the Indian state of Assam. Tuni river flows through the middle of the Majuli, the largest river island of the world. Sri Sri Bhogpur Satra, one of the several ancient Sattras of Assam is located near the Tuni river. Tuni river is also known as Bashistha Ganga.

Bhuban Gam is an Indian politician from Bharatiya Janata party who was the member of Assam Legislative Assembly by re-election from Majuli Constituency since 2022, when Sarbanananda Sanowal resigns to become Union minister.
