The Iranian company known as Mado specializes in aircraft propulsion systems. [1] [2] [3]

The managing director of the Mado company, Yousef Aboutaleni, was sanctioned by the United States in 2021 for his role in the MT Mercer Street bombing. [1] The company's ownership list includes Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Abdollah Mehrabi. [1]

Sanctions

On 29 October 2021 the US added to its Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List both Aboutaleni and Mehrabi as well as Mado. [4] [5]

On 29 October 2022 Mado Company and Aboutaleni were designated pursuant to Executive Order 13382 for having provided, or attempted to provide, financial, material, technological, or other support for, or goods or services in support of, the IRGC. At the same time, Mehrabi was designated pursuant to E.O. 13382 for acting or purporting to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, the IRGC ASF SSJO. [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]

The organization has also been sanctioned for its contributions to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. [12]

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, also called by media Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Sepah Pasdaran, is a multi-service primary branch of the Iranian Armed Forces. It was officially established by Ruhollah Khomeini as a military branch in May 1979, in the aftermath of the Iranian Revolution. Whereas the Iranian Army protects the country's sovereignty in a traditional capacity, the IRGC's constitutional mandate is to ensure the integrity of the Islamic Republic. Most interpretations of this mandate assert that it entrusts the IRGC with preventing foreign interference in Iran, thwarting coups by the traditional military, and crushing "deviant movements" that harm the ideological legacy of the Islamic Revolution. Currently, the IRGC is designated as a terrorist organization by Bahrain, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Sweden and the United States.

The United States has since 1979 applied various economic, trade, scientific and military sanctions against Iran. In the mid-1980s, Iran became interested in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Iranians have since began manufacturing (UAVs). As an attack munition rather than intelligence, surveillance, or reconnaissance (ISR) platform, the first generation Ababil appears to have been deployed during the Iran–Iraq War.
