Magdalena Zyzak (born 1983) is a Polish filmmaker and novelist. Her directorial debut, Maya Dardel, premiered in the Narrative Competition at the 2017 South by Southwest Film Festival [2] [3] and was acquired by Samuel Goldwyn Films and Orion Pictures. [4] She went on to direct The Wall of Mexico , which premiered at South by Southwest in 2019, [5] and then When I'm a Moth . [6] Zyzak's first novel, The Ballad of Barnabas Pierkiel, [7] was published by Henry Holt in 2014. [8] [9] Zyzak's second novel, The Lady Waiting, is forthcoming from Penguin Random House in 2024. Early life and education

Zyzak was born in 1983 in Zabrze, Poland. In 2002, she moved to the US to study film production and literature at the University of Southern California. [11] After producing the feature film Redland, Magdalena attended Columbia University's graduate program in creative writing and received an MFA. [11]

Career

Zyzak's first feature film, produced and co-written [12] with director Asiel Norton, Redland, [13] a wilderness drama, was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award [14] and was picked as one of the Top Fourteen Films of the Year by Hammer to Nail. [15] She went on to produce a second feature film directed by Asiel Norton, Orion, a post-apocalyptic fable, shot in the ruins of Detroit, starring David Arquette, Lily Cole and Goran Kostic. In 2016, she shifted from producing to directing and teamed up with Zachary Cotler to found The Winter Film Company. [11] Zyzak's first film as a director, Maya Dardel, starring Lena Olin, Jordan Gavaris, Alexander Koch, Nathan Keyes, and Rosanna Arquette, was released in 2017. [16] Zyzak and filmmaking partner Zachary Cotler received Best Screenplay for Maya Dardel at the Prague Independent Film Festival [17] [18] and Best Director for Maya Dardel at the 2017 Raindance Film Festival. [19] Zyzak has been honored by the national foundation Teraz Polska as an outstanding cultural figure of the Polish community abroad. South by Southwest (SXSW) is an annual conglomeration of parallel film, interactive media, and music festivals and conferences organized jointly that take place in mid-March in Austin, Texas. It began in 1987 and has continued growing in both scope and size every year. In 2017, the conference lasted for 10 days with the interactive track lasting for five days, music for seven days, and film for nine days. There was no in-person event in 2020 and 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in Austin; in both years there was a smaller online event instead.

Charles Henry Ferguson is an angel investor and strategic advisor to early stage technology startups and venture capital firms, especially in artificial intelligence. He is also the founder and president of Representational Pictures, Inc. and American director and producer of four feature documentaries, including No End in Sight (2007), which won the Sundance Special Jury Prize and Inside Job (2010), which won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. His second film, The Wall of Mexico, premiered at South by Southwest in 2019. A third film, When I'm a Moth, came out shortly after the second. He won the 2012 Sawtooth Poetry Prize for Sonnets to the Humans and the 2014 Colorado Prize for Poetry for Supplice. In 2011, the Poetry Foundation awarded him the Ruth Lilly Fellowship.

When I'm a Moth is a 2019 American independent drama film directed by Zachary Cotler and Magdalena Zyzak and starring Addison Timlin as Hillary Clinton, then Hillary Rodham. The film is set in 1969 and depicts Rodham during the summer she worked in Alaska following her graduation from Wellesley College. Cotler has stated that the film is "not a biopic".

Hillary is a 2020 American documentary film about Hillary Clinton directed by Nanette Burstein. It had its premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, and was selected to be shown at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival. The film received overall positive reviews from critics, who praised it for its exploration of Clinton's life.
