Magude is a town in Maputo Province in southern Mozambique. It is the seat of Magude District.

History

On 27 March 1974, the Magude train disaster, in which a passenger train collided head-on with a freight train carrying petroleum products, caused 70 deaths and 200 injuries.

    Júlio Duarte Langa is a prelate of the Catholic Church. He is the bishop emeritus of Xai-Xai, Mozambique, where he served as bishop from 24 October 1976 until his retirement on 12 July 2004.

    Alberto Massavanhane was a Mozambican diplomat, teacher, and the first Mayor of Maputo. After the signing of Lusaka Accord, in 1974, Massavanhane was nominated by Frelimo as Mayor of Lourenço Marques during the transition government, becoming the first Mozambican to be President of the Executive Council of Maputo after Independence of Mozambique in 1975. In 1983 Alberto Massavanhane was again called to be the head of Maputo local government, before being designated as Ambassador of Mozambique in the Kingdom of Sweden from 1988 until his death in 1993.

    The Magude train disaster occurred on 27 March 1974 in Magude, Portuguese Mozambique, when a train carrying passengers from Rhodesia collided head-on with a Mozambican freight train, causing an explosion that killed 70 people and injured 200. At the time, it was the worst rail disaster in Mozambique's history.
