Selim II, also known as Selim the Blond or Selim the Drunk, was the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1566 until his death in 1574. He was a son of Suleiman the Magnificent and his wife Hurrem Sultan. Selim had been an unlikely candidate for the throne until his brother Mehmed died of smallpox, his half-brother Mustafa was strangled to death by the order of his father, his brother Cihangir succumbed to chronic health issues, and his brother Bayezid was killed on the order of his father after a rebellion against Selim. The Battle of Chaldiran took place on 23 August 1514 and ended with a decisive victory for the Ottoman Empire over the Safavid Empire. As a result, the Ottomans annexed eastern Anatolia and northern Iraq from Safavid Iran. It marked the first Ottoman expansion into eastern Anatolia, and the halt of the Safavid expansion to the west. The historiography of the battle is complex; the Safavid dynasty's legitimacy and identity with local Sufi, Christian, Muslim, Turkic and Tajik traditions was already established by an arcane corpus of spiritual polemic works. The anti-Safavid historical work "Lament on the Incursions of Shah Ismail" by 16th century Armenian priest and historian Karapet Baghishetsi condemning Safavid rule in Western Armenia is published in 1513, one year before the Ottoman victory over the Safavids at the Battle of Chaldiran.
