Mahmud Karimov (18 October 1948; Yerevan, Armenian SSR - 10 February 2013; Istanbul, Turkey) was an Azerbaijani physicist, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, President of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.
Mahmud Karimov was born in Yerevan and graduated from the physics faculty of Azerbaijan State University.
Karimov's main research was related to radiation physics, informatics and physics of dielectrics. He also conducted scientific research in the fields of radioecology and radiation materials science. He headed the Radiation Research Sector for a long time and in 2001, was elected a full member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. Karimov collaborated with the International Atomic Energy Agency and worked on several projects related to radiation research. He was also a member of the commissions of CIS countries and Turkic countries on peaceful use of atomic energy. He was the president of ANAS from 2001 to 2013. [1]
Karimov was the author of more than 200 articles and the owner of numerous patents. He worked as the president of the National Academy of Sciences, the chairman of the Republican Council for the Organization and Coordination of Scientific Research. [2]
Mahmud Kerimov had two children named Sabina and Farid. He died on February 10, 2013, from a heart failure attack in one of the clinics in Istanbul, where he was urgently delivered by a special flight from Baku for emergency medical care. He was buried in the First Alley of Honor. [3]
Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), located in Baku, is the main state research organization and the primary body that conducts research and coordinates activities in the fields of science and social sciences in Azerbaijan. It was established on 23 January 1945.
The Shamakhy Astrophysical Observatory, named after Nasreddin Tusi of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan was established on November 17, 1959, by decree No. 975 of the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR. ShAO operates as a research institute within the ANAS Department of Physical, Mathematical, and Technical Sciences. The Observatory is located in the north-east of the Greater Caucasus Range, 150 km from the city of Baku, in the eastern part of Mount Pirkuli, at an altitude of 1435–1500 m above sea level, in geographical coordinates λ = 48⁰ 35' 04" E, φ = 40⁰ 46 '20"N. Here the number of clear nights suitable for observation reaches 150-180 per year.
Azerbaijan National Aerospace Agency is a governmental body that coordinates all Azerbaijani space research programs with scientific and commercial goals. Shaig Asgarov born in Agsu, Azerbaijan, on January 10, 1966. Upon leaving Agsu city high school No. 2 in 1993, he did his military service in the Far East in 1984-1986. Academician Abdullayev was one of the founders of the Soviet semiconductors physics and a leading scientist in new technologies. He made an outstanding contribution to the development of electronics, astrophysics, aeronautics, medicine, biophysics and defense industries. Academician Abdullayev was the author of 585 Soviet and foreign patents, including 171 secret and 65 top secret patents, author of 28 scientific books (monographs), over 800 journal and encyclopedia articles in English, Russian and Azerbaijani languages.
Heydar Aliyev, the former President of Azerbaijan, died on 12 December 2003 in the Cleveland Clinic at 10 am local time from heart failure at the age of 80. On 14 December, his coffin was taken to Baku.
