Malek was a Chilean-bred racehorse. He raced with considerable success in South America before being exported to the United States where he recorded his biggest win in the 1998 Santa Anita Handicap.
Malek was a bay horse with a stripebred in Chile by the Haras Mocito Guapo. He was sired by the Argentinian stallion Mocito Guapo, a grandson of the American champion Nashua, out of the locally bred mare Condegnita. [1] Malek was bred on the same Mocito Guapo–Chairman Walker cross as the undefeated mare Moscona.
Malek debuted on March 18, 1996, in a 1200-meter race at Club Hípico de Santiago, in which he finished fourth. Malek broke his maiden in May at Hipódromo Chile, and later that month won the Group Three Clásico Victor Matetic Fernandez. [3] In June, in his last race as a two-year-old, Malek won the Group One Tanteo de Potrillos by about three-quarters of a length. [4]
Malek next ran in and won the Group Two Clásico Domingo 2 Herrera Martínez. [3] Malek finished third in the Group One Dos Mil Guineas to Tango Uno, [5] then ran down Tango Uno to win the Group One Gran Criterium. [6] Malek won the listed Clásico Guillermo del Pedregal H. before finishing second to Golden Tribute in the Clásico St. Leger. [7] Facing older horses for the first time, Malek finished second in the listed Clásico Julio Prado Amor before winning the ungraded Clásico Alberto Vial L. [3] In his final race in Chile, Malek finished second by two lengths to Gran Ducato in the Group One Gran Premio Hipodromo Chile. [8]
In 1997 Malek was sent to race in the United States where he was trained by Richard Mandella. He was ridden in most of his American races by Alex Solis. In his first race in the United States, Malek won an allowance race at Hollywood Park before finishing second in the Grade Two San Pasqual Handicap on January 10, 1998. [9] In March 1998 he won the Santa Anita Handicap [10] and finished fourth to Silver Charm in the Dubai World Cup. Malek didn't race again until the following year, where he again finished second in the San Pasqual Handicap as well as the San Antonio Handicap before returning to Dubai. [9]
Malek finished second to Almutawakel in the 1999 Dubai World Cup [11] and ran third behind Real Quiet in the Hollywood Gold Cup. He then won the ungraded Viking Spirit Handicap at Del Mar before running fifth in the Pacific Classic. Malek's last race was in 2000 in the Santa Anita Handicap, where he finished fourth. [9]
Malek was retired and stood as a breeding stallion in Chile before moving to California in 2001. [12] [13] He returned to Chile in 2006.

The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, often shortened to Triple Crown, is a series of horse races for Thoroughbreds, often restricted to three-year-olds. Winning all three of these Thoroughbred horse races is considered the greatest accomplishment in Thoroughbred racing. The term originated in mid-19th-century England and nations where Thoroughbred racing is popular each have their own Triple Crown series.
Cigar, was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who was the 1995 and 1996 American Horse of the Year. He was the first American racehorse racing against top-class competition to win 16 consecutive races since Triple Crown winner Citation did so between 1948 and 1950. His major wins included the 1995 Breeders' Cup Classic, the NYRA Mile, Jockey Club Gold Cup, Woodward Stakes (twice), Oaklawn Handicap, Hollywood Gold Cup, Donn Handicap (twice) and the first running of the Dubai World Cup. He became the leading money earner in racing history and was later inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.
Tomcito is a Peruvian Thoroughbred racehorse.
Candy Ride is a retired Thoroughbred racehorse who went undefeated in six starts on both turf and dirt racing surfaces in Argentina and the United States. In Argentina, he won the Gran Premio San Isidro and the Joaquin S. de Anchorena, setting a world record of 1:31.01 for 1,600 meters on the turf in the latter. He was named Argentina's Champion Miler of 2002. Relocated to the United States in 2003, he won the American Handicap and set a track record in the Pacific Classic Stakes. Retired to stud in Kentucky, he developed into a top 10 sire whose notable offspring include American Horse of the Year Gun Runner.

Lookin At Lucky is a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2010 Preakness Stakes. He was the 2009 Champion Two-Year-Old and 2010 Champion Three-Year-Old, becoming the first horse in 32 years to win these awards.
Cocoa Beach is a notable Chilean-bred thoroughbred racehorse who was the 2008 Chilean Horse of the Year and won races in the United Arab Emirates, Chile, and the United States.
Grozny (1995–2000) was a gray racehorse and Peruvian Triple Crown winner. He died in 2000. Trainer Fernando Chang considered Grozny the best horse he ever trained, and one of the best he ever saw. Assistant trainer Félix Banda also considered Grozny his best horse, and stated that he was fast and agile and always gave his all in a race. During his triple crown run, Grozny was owned by stud Temsa, trained by Fernando Chang, and ridden by David Cora.
Romántico was a South American Thoroughbred racehorse. He twice won two major Argentinian and Uruguayan races: the Gran Premio José Pedro Ramírez, and the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini. He also won the Gran Premio Nacional (Uruguay), Polla de Potrillos, and the Uruguayan Triple Crown, among others. Nicknamed El petizo sin par, Romántico is considered the best Uruguayan thoroughbred of the 20th century.
Pants On Fire is an American Thoroughbred racehorse. A seven-time stakes winner, his biggest win came in the 2011 Louisiana Derby.
Northern Afleet was an American thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He is best known as the sire of dual Triple Crown Classic winner Afleet Alex and Breeders' Cup winners World Approval and Amazombie
Classic Fame was an American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a track career interrupted by illness and injury he won eight of his nineteen starts over five seasons. He began in Ireland as a two-year-old in 1988 when he was unbeaten in three races including the National Stakes and the Beresford Stakes. After being well beaten in two starts as a three-year-old he developed Horse colic and missed the rest of the year before being transferred to the United States. Racing mainly in California he won the American Handicap in 1990 and then returned from injury to take the San Gabriel Handicap and San Marcos Handicap as a six-year-old in 1992.
Blush With Pride was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. A winner of the Kentucky Oaks, Blush With Pride won graded stakes races on both dirt and turf during her racing career. She later went on to become an important broodmare.
Accelerate is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse, best known for winning the 2018 Breeders' Cup Classic. He established his reputation when defeating champion Arrogate in the 2017 GII San Diego Handicap, and prior to his Breeders' Cup success won the GI Santa Anita Handicap, GI Gold Cup at Santa Anita Stakes, GI Pacific Classic Stakes, and the GI Awesome Again Stakes. He is one of three horses from the 2013 foal crop to win the Breeders' Cup Classic, along with Arrogate in 2016, and Gun Runner in 2017.
Santorín was a Peruvian Thoroughbred racehorse who was the first to win the Peruvian Quadruple Crown and is known as 'Salvador de la Hípica Peruana'. He went on to win the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini on 4 November 1973 by 13 lengths, a victory that is stated to have saved Peruvian horse racing. Santorín is regarded as the most important racehorse in Peruvian history and has a monument and race named after him at the Hipódromo de Monterrico. Santorín died on 19 December 1993, and he was buried at his owner's Haras Barlovento, where there now stands a museum dedicated to him.
Blue Stripe is a dual-hemisphere Argentine-bred multiple Graded Stakes winning Thoroughbred racehorse. Her graded wins include the Group 1 Gran Premio Criadores in Argentina and the Grade I Clement L. Hirsch Stakes in 2022 at Del Mar in Southern California. She was named the 2021 Argentine Champion Older Mare.

Miss Terrible was an Argentinian-bred thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning seven consecutive Group 1 races en route to being named the 2002 Argentine Mare of the Year, Champion Two-Year-Old Filly, and Champion Three-Year-Old Filly.
Asidero is an Argentine thoroughbred racehorse best known for his 1999 campaign, during which he won five consecutive Group 1 races and was named the Argentine Horse of the Year, Champion Three-Year-Old Male, and Champion Stayer.
