The Mali Boys, also known as MaliStrip or Mali Strip, [1] [note 1] are an organised street gang based in Leyton and Walthamstow, East London, particularly the postcodes E10 and E17. They are known to control the drug trade in the area with violence. In 2019, they were reported to have around 40-50 members and were reported to be responsible for hundreds of violent attacks and a number of killings, leading to the gang's reputation for extreme violence. The gang is named after Somalis (due to many of their founding members being of Somali descent), however, the gang is ethnically diverse, [2] though it is predominantly male. In a report commissioned by the local Waltham Forest council, the gang was described as "the most business driven, violent and ruthless" street gang in Waltham Forest. [1] Unlike many other street gangs, the Mali Boys are not active on social media and seek anonymity, though it has been reported they use Facebook to monitor police officials. The gang has connections with other organised crime groups in London, and operates county lines drug networks. [3] [4] [1] [5] The gang is involved in criminal child exploitation and the grooming of young children. [6]

Contents

Many smaller local gangs are in alliance or have been subsumed into the Mali Boys, such as Drive & Marlowe (DM), Boundary, Coppermill, and Stoneydown. In 2018, it was reported that police sources estimate the gang generates approximately £50,000 per week from its drug sales. [1]

History

The Mali Boys emerged in 2015 after it splintered off from the Beaumont Crew gang. [1]

On 14 March 2018, Joseph Williams-Torres was shot and killed in Walthamstow, East London by members of the Mali Boys. Joseph Williams-Torres had mistakenly been identified as a gang member and was not the intended target. Prosecutor Allison Hunter QC said the killing was part of a set of related and retaliatory acts of violence rooted in a dispute between rival groups. In particular, violence had begun to escalate after Mali Boys member Elijah Dornelly was murdered in May 2017. The Mali Boys were reported to be in a 'turf war' with a group known as Priory Court or Higham Hill. One of the defendants accused of murder, Hamza Ul Haq, had previously been squirted with acid in November 2017, while another member of the Mali Boys was stabbed by a group of individuals in Walthamstow. In December 2018, Daniel Fakoya, a member of rival gang Priory Court, and two other men drove a stolen car into Leyton High Road, territory of the Mali Boys. They were armed with a loaded gun, a knife, and ammonia. They encountered and chased four members of the Mali Boys until they ran and hid inside an off-licence. Daniel was later sentenced to 15 years in prison for the offence. [10] [11] [12]

On 8 January 2019, 14-year old Jaden Moodie was stabbed to death nine times by a group of Mali Boys members in Leyton, East London. Jaden was associated with rival gang Beaumont Crew (also known as Let’s Get Rich) and was allegedly out drug dealing at the time of death. Mali Boys members drove into his scooter and stabbed him as he lay on the ground. Ayoub Majdouline was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 21 years and 18 months to run concurrently as a result of the murder. Ayoub Majdouline had previously been identified as a victim of modern slavery by the National Crime Agency. [13] [8] [14] [15]

In November 2021, five members of the Mali Boys were found guilty of supplying class A drugs to Essex. [16]

Music

Members using the group name, MaliStrip, are active within the UK drill and trap music scenes. This includes artists such as Richi, Baby Mane, Ridla, AK, S10th, M1 and RondoMontana. [1] [17] [18] [19] The group was named by VICE as having played a role in the exposure of Somali rap artists. [20]

With regard to street gangs the cities identified as having the most serious gang problems, which accounted for 65% of firearm homicides in England and Wales, were London, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool. Glasgow in Scotland also has a historical gang culture with the city having as many teenage gangs as London, which had six times the population, in 2008.

Salakau, which means 369 in Hokkien, also known as "Sah Lak Kau", is a street gang or secret society based in Singapore. The numbers 3, 6 and 9 add up to 18, which was the name of an older gang; the number signified the 18 arhats of Shaolin Monastery. As one of the oldest and most prominent gangs in the country, they are known to take part in many illicit activities such as narcotics, extortion, prostitution and white-collar crime — and many of their members have been in and out of prison for violent attacks and rioting. They have a renowned gang chant sung in Hokkien that is usually accompanied by techno beats, particularly the song "Million Tears". It was reproduced for Royston Tan's teenage gangster flick 15, albeit with direct references to the gang edited out.

The Peckham Boys, also referred to as Black Gang, is a multi-generational gang based in Peckham, South London. The gang is particularly prominent for its members prolific activity in music. Giggs, once a member of the SN1 set, is generally credited with popularising the British gangsta rap style known as road rap. Giggs would proceed to have a successful musical career, and re-form SN1 as a record label. In 2011, Peckham Boys rapper Stigs was given the first ever gang injunction, banning him from making any music that may encourage violence. Stigs was at the time allegedly a member of Anti GMG. In 2011, Southwark Council identified three sets of the Peckham Boys, PYG, Anti GMG and SN1, as the most active gangs in the Peckham area.

The Tottenham Mandem were an organised street gang based in Tottenham, North London, that began on the Broadwater Farm estate prior to the Broadwater Farm riot in 1985. One of the early members and later leader Mark Lambie was a suspect in the murder of PC Keith Blakelock during that riot. Lambie had been top of Operation Trident's wanted list due to the close links he had built with gangs in Wembley, Harlesden and south London. He was jailed in 2002. During the 90s, TMD was one of the largest gangs in North London and controlled much of the drug markets in the area.

Ackquille Jean Pollard, known professionally as Bobby Shmurda, is an American rapper. Along with Rowdy Rebel, Shmurda is considered a pioneer of Brooklyn drill music. He rose to international fame in 2014 when his single, "Hot Nigga", peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100. Its success led him to sign with Epic Records to release his debut extended play (EP), Shmurda She Wrote, (2014).

Tyquian Terrel Bowman better known by his stage name Quando Rondo, is an American rapper and singer. He signed with YoungBoy Never Broke Again's namesake record label, an imprint of Atlantic Records shortly after the release of his 2018 single, "I Remember". The song received platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and preceded his debut studio album, QPac (2020), which entered the Billboard 200 and contained his second platinum-certified song, "ABG". His second album, Recovery (2023), entered the chart.

67 are a British music group and street gang in the UK drill scene originally composed of members LD, Monkey, Dimzy, Liquez, ASAP and SJ. The group gained notoriety following the police shooting of Chris Kaba.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">South Kilburn</span> Housing estate in Kilburn, London

South Kilburn is a large housing estate in Kilburn, in the London Borough of Brent. Typical of brutalist 1960s designs of public housing in the United Kingdom, it is characterised by high-density housing in low-rise flats and 11 concrete tower blocks. It was approved in 1959 and extended in 1963. This scheme was further developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s; redevelopment occurred during the 2010s. The population is predominantly Afro-Caribbean and Pashtun.

The "39ers gang," is a “hybrid” force of the Upper 9th Ward's G-Strip gang and 3-N-G, a notorious Central City drug gang named for its stronghold around Third and Galvez streets. Several of the alleged members also hailed from the Florida housing development. The gangs combined forces in early 2010 to press for control of the heroin trade in both areas, federal prosecutors allege, often through bloodshed against associates of rival gangs, such as "Ride or Die gang" from the 8th Ward of New Orleans and gangs associated with the former Calliope and Desire Projects. The gang is also held accountable for the double 2010 homicide in which the famous rapper Magnolia Shorty was killed. Authorities have connected the 39ers to over 45 murders.

GAS Gang, also known more simply as GG or GAS, was a British street gang based in Brixton, South London that formed sometime in the late 2000s. The name carries various different meanings, such as Guns And Shanks, Gangsters Always Shoot, Grip And Shoot, and Grind And Stack. By 2012, they were considered one of the most dangerous gangs in South London, with at least 3 murders being committed by alleged gang members since 2010. The local council and police in 2012 believed the gang was responsible for three quarters of violent incidents involving young people in Brixton, with up to eight suspect members of the gang going to jail for attempted murder or murder.

Marcellus Baz heads charity-based organisations in Nottingham, offering community sports facilities together with outreach to, and mentoring of, young people. In 2016, Baz was named the BBC Get Inspired Unsung Hero at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards for his support of young people in Nottingham, UK. He received the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2017 New Year Honours for services to youth boxing and the community in Nottingham.

Zone 2 is a British hip hop collective based in Peckham, London. The group has gained millions of views and streams through their music on YouTube and streaming platforms. The group is noteworthy for its rivalry with Moscow17. The rivalry began around 2016 and has resulted in various diss tracks between the two groups, as well as physical violence.
