The Maltese is a comparatively small sized rare breed of dairy goat known for its high milk production, high prolifacy and a resistance and adaptation to heat stress. [3]

Origin

This renowned dairy breed probably originated from the East and Central Mediterranean region, stretching to Asia Minor and the Middle East. As its name suggests, this breed takes its name from the island of Malta. [4]

History

Goats of the Maltese breed have been known in the Maltese islands for hundreds of years; with documented references published as early as the 19th century.

In 1886 the Maltese goat was already being showcased in the United Kingdom during a reunion for the colonial exposure of London. [5]

In the early 20th century the role of goats' milk in the transmission of Brucella melitensis in the Crown Colony of Malta became well known, and Maltese goats in particular were targeted. Stringent measures were adopted to identify and destroy all infected goats. Maltese goats which were positive for both milk and blood agglutination tests were destroyed.

In 1906 Maltese goatherds went on strike to prevent the authorities from sampling the milk for presence of the infective bacterium to avoid culling their goats. In some villages, 19% of all goats tested positive. In the same year a campaign was also launched against the use of raw goats' milk which lasted till 1916. By 1936 the consumption of un-boiled milk in shops had been prevented and by 1939 goatherds were also prohibited from selling fresh milk from door to door and from herding Maltese goats through the streets of Valletta and most towns.

In 1939 the Maltese goat population on the Maltese islands was estimated between 40,000 and 100,000 but numbers declined drastically by the end of World War II. [6] During these years of hardship, Maltese goats were forcefully slaughtered for consumption following severe food shortages. [7]

In 1956 an eradication program was launched to gradually replace goats' milk with cows' milk by exchanging goats for cows. The exchange was 11 goats for 1 imported dairy cow. This policy was later suspended in 1959. [8]

All these factors led to constant and rapid decline of the Maltese goat population in the Maltese islands.

Characteristics

The coat is usually long with straight hair but can also be short. Coat colour can be white, grey, black, light brown and reddish brown; and can be either plain, patchy, belted or with distinctive colour pattern distribution along the head and neck area. They are usually naturally polled, have a straight profile with ears ranging from horizontal or semi-pendulous to long lop with curled tips. [9]

Types

Considered an International Transboundary Breed, several sub-types of Maltese goats have emerged and tend to vary in different countries, namely:

Use

The Maltese is a valued milk breed. The milk has pleasant taste without an excessively "goaty" odour or flavour.

In Malta, the most common practice nowadays is to use milk for the production of a variety of traditional cheeselets known locally as ġbejniet, irkotta and other goat cheeses. [12]

In Sicily, milk is used to make ricotta and traditional caprino cheeses including Padduni, which has PAT status. [13]

Population

In Malta, the Maltese is the only indigenous goat breed. By 2024, the overall goat population in the Maltese islands has drastically fallen below 6,000 head with the population of the Maltese indigenous sub-type estimated to be less than 1,000 head as reported by Darryl Grech, Founder of Breeds of Origin Conservancy. [14] Additionally, the remaining Maltese goat population has been severely impacted by years of cross-breeding with other imported commercial breeds. [15]

In Italy, the Maltese is one of the eight autochthonous Italian goat breeds for which a genealogical herdbook is kept by the Associazione Nazionale della Pastorizia, the Italian national association of sheep and goat breeders. The herdbook was established in 1976. The Italian population of the Maltese breed was estimated in 1983 to be about 70,000, and in 2005 at 40,000. At the end of 2013 the registered population reported was 1,934. [16]

In 2023, a non-profit organisation named Breeds of Origin Conservancy collaborated with a Maltese farm in Delimara known as Tulliera Farm Deli and imported 60 Maltese goats from Sicily to strengthen the genetic pool of the endangered indigenous Maltese goat population in Malta. [17]

In August 2024, Darryl Grech, Founder of Breeds of Origin Conservancy and President of the Maltese Goat and Sheep Co-operative Society, through a letter addressed to the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, officially requested that the indigenous goat of the Maltese islands should be classified as a critically endangered 'Traditional Population' and the breed recognized as 'Local' and 'At-Risk'. This was done in an effort to safeguard the declining indigenous population. [18]

In September 2024, Breeds of Origin Conservancy officially launched the campaign 'Inħarsu l-Wirt Nazzjonali' with the aim to conserve and recognise endemic species and subspecies, indigenous livestock, and local agricultural cultivars and varieties as national heritage. The campaign's first target was to raise awareness about the decline of the indigenous goat of the Maltese islands with a traditional narrative ballad. [19]

On the 29th of September 2024, the first livestock show dedicated to the indigenous goats and sheep of the Maltese islands was held in Żejtun, Malta. This show was organised by Breeds of Origin Conservancy, in collaboration with the Koperattiva Maltija tal-Mogħoż u n-Nagħaġ (KMMN), Malta's Goat and Sheep Breeders Co-operative Society, in an effort to further highlight the need to safeguard the endangered traditional population of indigenous Maltese goats. [20]

The Girgentana is an Italian breed of domestic goat indigenous to the province of Agrigento, in the southern part of the Mediterranean island of Sicily. The name of the breed derives from Girgenti, the name of Agrigento in local Sicilian language. There were in the past more than 30,000 head in the hills and coastal zone of the province. Today, however, this breed is in danger of disappearance.

The Jonica is a breed of domestic goat from the province of Taranto, in Puglia in southern Italy. The origins of the breed are uncertain; it is thought to have originated from crossing of local varieties with the Maltese breed. The Jonica is one of the eight autochthonous Italian goat breeds for which a genealogical herdbook is kept by the Associazione Nazionale della Pastorizia, the Italian national association of sheep-breeders.

The Sarda is an indigenous breed of domestic goat from the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, off the west coast of central Italy. It is raised throughout the island, particularly in the provinces of Cagliari and Nuoro. It is an ancient breed that has been influenced by the Maltese goat.

The Garganica is a breed of domestic goat which originated on the Gargano promontory in the Puglia region of southern Italy. From there it has spread to other parts of Puglia and to neighbouring regions.

The Comisana, also known as Faccia Rossa and Lentinese, is an Italian breed of domestic sheep indigenous to central and northern areas of the Mediterranean island of Sicily. Its name derives from that of the comune of Comiso, in the province of Ragusa. It is raised principally in the provinces of Caltanissetta, Enna and Palermo, but is found in many other Italian provinces and has also been exported to other Mediterranean countries.

The Associazione Nazionale della Pastorizia, or roughly "national association of pastoralists", is the Italian national body responsible for the administration of sheep- and goat-breeding. It maintains the herd books for more than a hundred indigenous breeds of sheep and goats. It records breed numbers and submits them twice yearly to DAD-IS, and keeps records for all breeders of sheep and goats in the country.

The Brentegana is an Italian breed of sheep from the provinces of Trento and Verona in northern Italy. The name derives from that of the comune of Brentonico, the area where the breed is thought to have originated. Two distinct types are known: the Brentegana Scelta or Brentegana Trentina, a large heavy meat/wool type; and the Brentegana Comune, a medium-sized type more suitable for milk production. It is one of the forty-two autochthonous local sheep breeds of limited distribution for which a herdbook is kept by the Associazione Nazionale della Pastorizia, the Italian national association of sheep-breeders.

The Barbaresca or Barbaresca Siciliana is a breed of large fat-tailed sheep from the Mediterranean island of Sicily, in southern Italy. It derives from the cross-breeding between indigenous Sicilian Pinzirita sheep with fat-tailed Barbary sheep of Maghrebi origin. These were probably brought to the island after the Muslim conquest of Sicily in the 9th century; Arabic texts preserved at Agrigento document the movement of large numbers of sheep to the Sicilian interior.

The Pinzirita or Pinzunita is a breed of domestic sheep indigenous to the Mediterranean island of Sicily, Italy. Its name derives from pinzuni, the Sicilian language name for the chaffinch, Fringilla coelebs, which it is thought to resemble in colouring. It is also known as the Siciliana comune, or "common Sicilian sheep". It is distributed throughout most of Sicily, except for the southern coast, where the Comisana is preferred, and the hills of the provinces of Agrigento, Caltanissetta and the southern part of the province of Palermo, where the Barbaresca is predominant. Like the Leccese and Altamurana, it belongs to the Zackel sheep group. It is a hardy and frugal breed, well adapted to survival on poor mountain pasture and in the macchia mediterranea biome of inland Sicily.

The Rossa Mediterranea is a breed of domestic goat from the Mediterranean island of Sicily, in southern Italy. It derives from the Damascus goat of Syria and the eastern Mediterranean, and is thus also known as the Derivata di Siria. It is raised mainly in Sicily, but also in Basilicata and Calabria in southern mainland Italy.

The Napoletana is a breed of domestic goat from the area south of Naples, in Campania in southern Italy. It is raised on the slopes of Vesuvius, on the slopes of the Monti Lattari, and in the Agro Nocerino Sarnese which lies between them. The origin of the breed is unknown. It may derive from goats of African origin imported to the area in the early years of the twentieth century; the alternative name Torca Nera, "black Turkish goat", suggests an origin in the Mediterranean basin.

The Grigia Molisana is an indigenous breed of greyish domestic goat from Molise in southern Italy. It is raised in the comuni of Acquaviva Collecroci, Castelmauro, Montefalcone nel Sannio, Montemitro and San Felice del Molise; all are in the province of Campobasso, and the breed may also be called the Capra di Campobasso. The highest concentration is in Montefalcone, from which the name Capra di Montefalcone derives. The origins of the breed are not known; studies conducted in the 1980s suggest influence from the Alpino Comune, Garganica and Maltese breeds.

The Rustica di Calabria or Sciara is an indigenous breed of domestic goat from Calabria in southern Italy. It is raised mostly in the provinces of Catanzaro and Cosenza. Although present in substantial numbers it has been little studied; its conservation status and origins remain unclear. It may have been influenced by the various goat breeds, including the Abyssinian goat, the Maltese and a type known as "Tibetan", whose introduction to Calabria in the early twentieth century is documented.

The Cilentana Grigia is an indigenous breed of domestic goat from the province of Salerno, in Campania in southern Italy. It takes its name from the geographical region of the Cilento, much of which is today within the Parco Nazionale del Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni, and is raised mainly in that area, but also in the Monti Alburni and the Monti Picentini. It is one of three indigenous goat breeds in the Cilento, the others being the Cilentana Fulva and the Cilentana Nera. The Cilentana Grigia is found on lower ground and richer pasture than the Cilentana Nera, and is raised mainly for milk. The origins of the breed are obscure; it shows the influence of the Maltese and Garganica breeds, and similarities to other Italian grey breeds such as the Ciociara Grigia of Lazio and the Argentata dell'Etna from Sicily.

The Argentata dell'Etna is an indigenous breed of domestic goat from the area of Mount Etna in the province of Catania and the Monti Peloritani in the province of Messina, in the Mediterranean island of Sicily, in southern Italy. It is raised mainly in that area, but also in the provinces of Enna and Palermo. It is named for the volcano and for its silvery grey coat. The origins of the breed are unknown; it shows similarities to the Garganica breed, and to other Italian grey breeds such as the Ciociara Grigia of Lazio and the Cilentana Grigia of Campania.

The Aspromonte or Capra dell'Aspromonte is an indigenous breed of domestic goat from the mountain massif of the Aspromonte, in the province of Reggio Calabria in Calabria in southern Italy, for which it is named. It is raised only in the province of Reggio Calabria, mainly in the Aspromonte, in the Altipiano dello Zomaro to the north-east, and in the Ionian coastal areas of the province, and particularly in areas of Grecanic culture. While the breed is thought to originate on the Aspromonte, it may have been influenced by the various other goat breeds, including the Abyssinian goat, the Maltese, and a type known as "Tibetan" with long silky hair, whose importation to Calabria in the early twentieth century is well documented.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Messinese goat</span> Breed of goat

The Messinese is an indigenous breed of domestic goat from the area of the Monti Nebrodi and the Monti Peloritani in the province of Messina, in the Mediterranean island of Sicily, in southern Italy. It is raised mainly in those areas, but also in the provinces of Catania, Enna and Palermo. Its range partly overlaps that of the Argentata dell'Etna. The breed was officially recognised and a herd-book established in 2001. It was previously known either as the Capra dei Nebrodi or in general as the Siciliana Comune.

The Bormina is an indigenous breed of domestic goat from the Valtellina, in the northern part of the province of Sondrio, in Lombardy in northern Italy. It is particularly associated with the area of the comune of Bormio, from which its name derives. Because of the reddish colour of its coat and its clear Swiss markings, it may also be call the Frisa Rossa. It is raised mainly in the Valtellina but is also reported from the Lario and from the area of Varese. It does not have official recognition in Italy, and breed numbers are very low. Management is extensive: the animals are kept on high alpine pasture in the summer months, and brought under cover in winter.
