Mamadi Indoka is a Congolese director and screenwriter born 7 November 1976 in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo).

Biography

Indoka first encountered the world of cinema in 2002 with a short film shown in Madrid and decided to take up the practice of the seventh art. He studied cinema in Canada and the United States, where he became a director and screenwriter.

In 2005, he wrote and directed his first short, Une nuit d'enfer (A Night of Hell). In 2006, he wrote and directed another short, La Beauté de la mort (The Beauty of Death), then, in 2007, directed his first full-length feature, 32 ans après (32 Years After), written by Sebastiao Ndombasi. This film told the story of a man who returns to Angola 32 years after having fled war there, and is treated like a foreigner. [1]

In 2008, he wrote and directed the documentary La Pêche artisanale (Artisanal Fishing), [2] and in 2010, he directed two shorts: Le Sida (AIDS), written by Lionel Mwedi Malila, and Victime (Victim) which he wrote himself. In 2010 he filmed his second full-length feature, L'héritage envahi (The Invaded Heritage), written and directed by Mamadi Indoka with the support of Congo Films Productions, his production company. This second feature told the story of a heinous crime, an entire family murdered by a trusted bodyguard, who spared only an infant. He abandoned the child in a forest, certain it would die of natural causes. But years later the child, now a grown man, sets outs out to seek revenge. [1] [3] This may have been the earliest Congolese thriller, since it came out a year before Viva Riva! .

He was the leader of Orchestre Afrisa International, as well as one of Africa's most influential vocalists and prolific songwriters. Along with guitarist Dr Nico Kasanda, Tabu Ley pioneered soukous and internationalised his music by fusing elements of Congolese folk music with Cuban, Caribbean and Latin American rumba. He has been described as "the Congolese personality who, along with Mobutu, marked Africa's 20th century history." He was dubbed "the African Elvis" by the Los Angeles Times. After the fall of the Mobutu regime, Tabu Ley also pursued a political career. His musical career ran parallel to the other great Congolese rhumba bandleader and rival Franco Luambo Makiadi who ran the band TPOK Jazz throughout the 1960s, 1970s and '80s.

Louis Albert William Longomba, known professionally as Awilo Longomba, is a Congolese soukous singer, composer, drummer, songwriter, dancer, and producer. William is known for pioneering the techno-soukous genre, a variant of soukous that blends techno music with ndombolo, often incorporating elements of electro, dance music, and zouk.

La Vie est belle / Life is Rosy is a 1987 musical comedy directed by Mwezé Ngangura and Benoît Lamy. The film revolves around the vibrant music scene of Kinshasa and tells the rags-to-riches story of a poor rural musician played by legendary Congolese musician, Papa Wemba, the “King of Rumba Rock”, who seeks fame in the big city. The film was considered a major turning point in film production in the DRC with its more artistic approach. Unlike many African films of the time that concerned themselves with the effects of colonialism, La vie est belle celebrates Congolese culture, music and the lives of Kinshasans. The film score features Congolese music from artists Tshala Muana, Klody, and Zaiko Langa Langa, a Congolese soukous band co-founded by Papa Wemba.

Cinema of the Democratic Republic of the Congo originated with educational and propaganda films during the colonial era of the Belgian Congo. Development of a local film industry after the Democratic Republic of the Congo gained its independence from Belgium in 1960, and was handicapped by constant civil war.

Adou Elenga was a Congolese singer-songwriter, composer and guitarist. Signed on the Ngoma label since 1950, during his musical career, he composed several hits such as "Mokili Ekobaluka", which is his best known. The song is considered by Congolese as a prophecy of their independence. Other hits are "Maria Tchebo", "Pyramide", "Tout Le Monde Samedi Soir". His music was covered by many artists, including Sam Mangwana and Bopol Mansiamina.
