Man of Sorrows (originally titled Jesus Christ Revolution) is an Australian musical with music by Enzo Toppano and lyrics by Peggy Mortimer and Lorrae Desmond. The rock musical depicts the life of Jesus Christ, from his birth to his crucifixion and the resurrection.

Productions

The musical premiered under the title Jesus Christ Revolution at the Comedy Theatre, Melbourne on 8 January 1972. [1] [2] The cast included Steve Anthony as Jesus, Erl Dalby as Judas and Una Valli as Mary (as well as a young John Paul Young). [3] It closed after three weeks due to weak audience demand. [4]

The name was changed to Man of Sorrows for a subsequent Sydney production, which opened at the Pitt Street Congregational Centre on 6 June 1972. The cast included Ron Stevens as Jesus, Erl Dalby (from the Melbourne production) as Judas, Jennifer Bailey as Mother Mary and Janet Roberts as Mary Magdalene. [5]

A 1973 New Zealand production featured Rob Guest as Jesus. [6]

A studio recording of the songs "Hail All Hail" performed by Neil Williams, Kerrie Biddell and chorus and "My Boy's Different" performed by Biddell was released in May 1972. [7]

Jesus Christ Superstar or Jesus Christ Superstar – Original Australian Cast Recording is an album released in late 1972 on MCA Records. Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera created by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber in 1970. The earliest Australian version was staged from May 1972 to February 1974. This album features Trevor White, Jon English and Michele Fawdon. Together with other cast members, they performed vocals for a studio recording. It was produced by Patrick Flynn, the show's musical director and a conductor for Opera Australia. The album peaked at No. 17 on the Go-Set Albums Chart in June 1973, while it reached No. 13 on the Kent Music Report and remained on its charts for 54 weeks. It appeared in the top 100 on the 1974 End of Year Albums Chart. In May 1973, the album was awarded a gold record for sales of 50,000 albums.

Executively produced by Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice, and Marc Platt, it was a staged concert performance of the 1970 rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. It received positive reviews from critics but had a smaller viewership than earlier musical specials.

Packemin Productions is a theatre company based in Western Sydney, Australia. The company was formed in 2010 to produce Pro-Am musical theatre in association with Riverside Theatres Parramatta.
