The Manitoba Derby is a Canadian Thoroughbred horse race run annually at the beginning of August at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Established in 2023, it is the first jewel of the Western Canadian Triple Crown. A Listed Race for three-year-olds, it is contested on dirt over a distance of 1+18 miles (9 furlongs).

Steve Cauthen is a retired American jockey.

The Polo Park Racetrack was a Canadian horse racing facility in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Considered one of the finest racetracks in Western Canada, it was built by Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee R. James Speers. The six-furlong track opened in 1925 under the charter of the Winnipeg Jockey Club and the charter of St. Vital Agricultural Society in Winnipeg, Manitoba. At the same time, James Speers founded the Prairie Thoroughbred Breeders' Association to promote a breeding industry in Western Canada. In 1930 he created the Canadian Derby, a premier race for Canadian-bred three-year-old Thoroughbreds hosted by Polo Park Racetrack until its closure in 1956.

Gold Strike is a Canadian Thoroughbred Champion racehorse. Bred and raced by Dick Bonnycastle's Harlequin Ranches, she was out of the mare, Brassy Gold. Her sire was the outstanding Smart Strike, a two-time leading sire in North America who also sired Curlin, Soaring Free, and English Channel, among others.

Robert James Speers was a Canadian businessman and Canada's Sports Hall of Fame inductee who made a major contribution to the growth of Thoroughbred horse racing in Western Canada.

Gone to Royalty is a Canadian Thoroughbred race horse owned by Pierre-Louis Lévesque, son of Quebec businessman and one of Canada's preeminent racehorse owners, the late Jean-Louis Lévesque. Gone to Royalty was trained by Jacques Dumas. He was sired by Royal Chocolate out of Bon Debarras, and is half brother to Eternal Search, the 1981 Canadian Champion Sprint Horse and Canadian Champion Older Female Horse of 1982 and 1983.

Paul J. Bailey was an American jockey in Thoroughbred racing who, on June 26, 1959, set a New York Racing Association record with five wins from five mounts on a single racecard at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. It would be another 21 years before anyone matched that feat when both Jeffrey Fell and Jorge Velásquez did it during the month of June in 1980.

The Western Canadian Triple Crown was established in 2023, and consists of three races across three Canadian tracks. It consists of the Manitoba Derby, the Canadian Derby, and the British Columbia Derby. Announced on May 9, 2023, the Western Canadian Triple Crown adds a bonus incentive of $100,000 CAD to any horse who can win all three races.
