Maradana College of Technology is the oldest technical college in Sri Lanka. Formally known as the Ceylon Technical College which was an institution of higher education for Technical and Scientific fields in Ceylon and a government department. It was established as the Government Technical College in 1893 at Maradana, Colombo. In 1906 with renamed as Ceylon Technical College, it was the center for study of science such as chemistry, physics, biology and all technical training and development special in the areas of civil, electrical and mechanical engineering. The Maradana Technical College Building has become a landmark of Colombo.
When the Ceylon University College was established in 1921, the science section of the Ceylon Technical College was transferred to form the Department of Science, at the new University college which was affiliated to the University of London. The Technical College began preparing students for the external degrees in Engineering of the University of London since 1933 as well as for associate membership examinations of the professional institutions of civil, electrical and mechanical engineering.
In 1942 the Ceylon Technical College was separated from the Education Department and was made the Ceylon Technical College Department. Several years later began courses in accountancy and commerce. Soon after in 1950 the engineering courses were transferred to the newly established Faculty of Engineering of the University of Ceylon. In 1966 the engineering technicians courses were transferred to the Institute of Practical Technology. In 1964 it was absorbed into the Department of Technical Education and Training over the next decades the several technical colleges were established around the country and the existing junior technical colleges where upgraded.
Coming under the Department of Technical Education and Training, the principal technical college remained at Maradana, retain the name Maradana College of Technology along with 32 colleges of technology, and technical colleges today come under the purview of the Ministry of Tertiary Education & Training however it is currently under the Ministry of Youth Affears.
The Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology is a Degree Awarding Institute in Sri Lanka specializing in technology, engineering and business. It is an autonomous private higher education institute in Sri Lanka, awarding undergraduate and taught- and research postgraduate degrees. It has two campuses and four regional centres, the main campus being based in Malabe and a Metropolitan Campus in Colombo. Current enrollment is approximately 7000 in total.

The University of Moratuwa is a technological university in Sri Lanka. It is located on the bank of the Bolgoda Lake in Katubedda, Moratuwa. The institution was known as Ceylon College of Technology, Katubedda before gaining university status. General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) located at Kandawala, Ratmalana, Colombo, is a joint services academy where cadets of the three wings Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Air Force are trained before they go for their pre-commission training to their academies. Established in 1980 as the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy, named after General Sir John Kotelawala, 3rd Prime Minister of Ceylon; it was elevated to the status of a university by an amendment bill passed in Parliament on 11 October 2007.
University of the Visual and Performing Arts (UVPA) is a public university located primarily in Colombo, Sri Lanka, specialising in art, design, fashion and the performing arts. It was formerly known as the Government College of Fine Arts, Heywood Institute of Art and the Institute of Aesthetic Studies of the University of Ceylon. It has no known date of foundation, but there is evidence of teaching as far back as 1893. It is the only university in Sri Lanka to exclusively offer special degree programs in visual and performing arts.

Bamunusinghearachchige Don Rampala, was Chief Mechanical Engineer and later general manager of Sri Lanka Railways. He was the first native Sri Lankan to hold the post of Chief Mechanical Engineer. In 1956, the Institution of Locomotive Engineers in London recognised Rampala as the finest diesel engineer in Asia at the time.

The Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Education is a statutory body in Sri Lanka coming under the purview of the Higher Education Ministry and offering Higher National Diploma courses. At present, it manages and supervises eighteen provincial Advanced Technological Institutes throughout the island. The Institute is traditionally known for its education in the accountancy and engineering. As per the recommendations of the Committee appointed by Prof. Wiswa Waranapala, Deputy Minister of Higher Education in 1994, the Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technical Education (SLIATE) was formed in 1995, under the Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technical Education Act No. 29 of 1995. In 2001 the name of the institution was amended as Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Education (SLIATE).

Samarajeewa "Sam" Karunaratne, FIET, FIEE, FIESL is an emeritus professor of engineering and a leading Sri Lankan academic who is the founding chancellor and president of the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology and the former vice-chancellor of the University of Moratuwa. He has held a number of other appointments in the field of higher education in Sri Lanka, including senior professor of electrical engineering and dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, president of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka. Karunaratne is a pioneer in the development of the use of computers in the field of engineering and played an important role in the development of information technology education and industry in Sri Lanka.
Engineering is the most sought after subject areas among Sri Lankan students. The engineering degrees make up less than 2% of the bachelor's degrees in Sri Lanka.
