This article is about the history of the Maratha Confederacy during its initial stages when it was a kingdom under the rule of Shivaji and Sambhaji. [1] [2] [ self-published source? ]
For the political entity proper see Maratha Confederacy.
In 1674, Shivaji was coronated as the king despite opposition from local Brahmins. Praised for his chivalrous treatment of women, Shivaji employed people of all castes and religions, including Muslims and Europeans, in his administration and armed forces. Shivaji's military forces expanded the Maratha sphere of influence, capturing and building forts, and forming a Maratha navy.
During its early periods it came in conflict with the Bijapur Sultanate a client state of the Mughal Empire.
