Marco Calvani (born 11 December 1980) is an Italian playwright, director, filmmaker, translator and actor.
Trained as an actor since he was a teenager, Calvani made his debut as a playwright in 2002 with Quasi, commissioned by the European Social Forum.
Strong Hands was his first play to be translated and performed to great acclaim throughout Europe. Commissions from the Todi Arte Festival, the Phoenix Theatre, London, La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club of New York, Teatro di Roma, Théâtre de la Ville of Paris and the Festival Grec de Barcelona followed.
His play The City Beneath had its New York City debut at the Sage Theater in 2009. In the same year he also wrote and directed Penelope in Groznyj, performed first at Berlin's Kunsthaus Tacheles [1] and was the only European guest at Bali's international Ubud Writers and Readers Festival. [2]
In 2011 he won a residency at the Cité internationale des arts [3] of Paris and was invited by the Théâtre de la Ville [4] to represent Italy in an international writing project. In the same year he was awarded the SIAE Prize [5] as best playwright at the Spoleto Festival.
He created the project AdA (Author directing Author) with his friend and colleague Neil LaBute, for which he wrote Things of This World (Festival dei Due Mondi of Spoleto, [6] Fringe Festival Madrid, [7] La MaMa Theatre, New York), [8] The Second Time (Venice Biennale Teatro, [9] La MaMa Theatre New York), [8] [10] and After the Dark (Sala Beckett Barcelone, [11] La MaMa Theatre New York). [8]
In 2013 the Teatro Metastasio Stabile della Toscana organized a retrospective of his work for which he wrote and directed I am Dracula. The same year, Glory Kadigan directed the New York premiere of his play Oil, for which he was presented with the Award for Outstanding Playwriting at the Planet Connections Theater Festivity Awards. [12] He is the founder and artistic director of Mixò, an international cultural center that brings together young actors and writers and promotes original works for stage and screen. His works have been translated and performed in six languages.
He is a member of the Dramatists Guild of America and of the Playwrights/Directors Unit at the Actors Studio. [13] He is a permanent artist-in-residence at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club of New York.
In 2015 he was awarded the Writer Fellowship from the Edward F. Albee Foundation. [14]
His play Beautiful Day Without You was commissioned by the Off-Broadway Origin Theatre Company and had its world premiere at the West End Theatre of New York in November 2018 directed by Erwin Maas. [15]
He teaches writing and acting in the United States and Europe. He translates from English and French into Italian and he is an official translator of Theresa Rebeck, Bernard-Marie Koltès and Bryony Lavery.
Most recently he wrote and directed the short film The View from Up Here [16] (US/France, 2017) starring Melissa Leo and Leïla Bekhti, based on his eponymous play originally commissioned by The Actors Studio and directed by Estelle Parsons.
His second short film A Better Half was named Best Short of 2022 by the British Film Magazine Close-Up.
His first feature film, High Tide , had its world premiere at SXSW in March 2024. It stars Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei, Tony-winner Bill Irwin, Spirit Award-winner Mya Taylor, and Brazilian star Marco Pigossi. He also produced it alongside Mickey Liddell and Pete Shilaimon at LD Entertainment.
As of 2020, he is in a relationship [17] with Brazilian actor Marco Pigossi. [18]

Lanford Wilson was an American playwright. His work, as described by The New York Times, was "earthy, realist, greatly admired [and] widely performed". Wilson helped to advance the off-off-Broadway theater movement with his earliest plays, which were first produced at the Caffe Cino beginning in 1964. He was one of the first playwrights to move from off-off-Broadway to off-Broadway, then Broadway and beyond.
Edward Franklin Albee III was an American playwright known for works such as The Zoo Story (1958), The Sandbox (1959), Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962), A Delicate Balance (1966), and Three Tall Women (1994). Some critics have argued that some of his work constitutes an American variant of what Martin Esslin identified as and named the Theater of the Absurd. Three of his plays won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and two of his other works won the Tony Award for Best Play.
Samuel Shepard Rogers III was an American actor, playwright, author, director and screenwriter whose career spanned half a century. He won 10 Obie Awards for writing and directing, the most by any writer or director. He wrote 58 plays as well as several books of short stories, essays, and memoirs. Shepard received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1979 for his play Buried Child and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of pilot Chuck Yeager in the 1983 film The Right Stuff. He received the PEN/Laura Pels Theater Award as a master American dramatist in 2009. New York magazine described Shepard as "the greatest American playwright of his generation."
Neil N. LaBute is an American playwright, film director, and screenwriter. He is best known for a play that he wrote and later adapted for film, In the Company of Men (1997), which won awards from the Sundance Film Festival, the Independent Spirit Awards, and the New York Film Critics Circle. He wrote and directed the films Your Friends & Neighbors (1998), Possession (2002), The Shape of Things (2003), The Wicker Man (2006), Some Velvet Morning (2013), and Dirty Weekend (2015). He directed the films Nurse Betty (2000), Lakeview Terrace (2008), and the American adaptation of Death at a Funeral (2010). LaBute created the TV series Billy & Billie, writing and directing all of the episodes. He is also the creator of the TV series Van Helsing. Recently, he executive produced, co-directed and co-wrote Netflix's The I-Land. He also directed several episodes for shows such as Hell on Wheels and Billions.
Three Tall Women is a two-act play by Edward Albee that premiered at Vienna's English Theatre in 1991. The three unnamed women, one in her 90s, one in her 50s, and one in her 20s, are referred to in the script as A, B, and C. The character of A, the oldest woman, is based in part on Albee's mother. In the first act, B is the caretaker and C is the lawyer for A, while in the second act they become personifications of A from earlier in her life.

The Zoo Story is a one-act play by American playwright Edward Albee. His first play, it was written in 1958 and completed in just three weeks. The play explores themes of isolation, loneliness, miscommunication as anathematization, social disparity and dehumanization in a materialistic world. Today, professional theatre companies can produce The Zoo Story either as a part of Edward Albee's at Home at the Zoo, or as a standalone play. Its prequel, Homelife, written in 2007, however, can only be produced as a part of Edward Albee's at Home at the Zoo.
Marshall W. Mason is an American theater director, educator, and writer. Mason founded the Circle Repertory Company in New York City and was artistic director of the company for 18 years (1969–1987). He received an Obie Award for Sustained Achievement in 1983. In 2016, he received the Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theater.

La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club is an Off-Off-Broadway theater founded in 1961 by African-American theatre director, producer, and fashion designer Ellen Stewart. Located in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City, the theater began in the basement boutique where Stewart sold her fashion designs. Stewart turned the space into a theater at night, focusing on the work of young playwrights.
