Marco Liserre

Marco Liserre is a University Professor in electrical engineering currently Head of the Chair of Power Electronics at the University of Kiel in Kiel, Germany. He was named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2013. [1] He is Deputy Director of Fraunhofer ISIT and Founder of ISIT@CAU, 2022. [2] [3] [4] Prof. Liserre is also honored with the prestigious IEEE PELS R. David Middlebrook Achievement Award for the year 2023. [5]

Biography

Prof. Liserre received his MSc and PhD degrees in 1998 and 2002, respectively from Bari Polytechnic in Electrical Engineering. He served as an Associate Professor there at Bari Polytechnic and from 2012, he was a Professor in reliable power electronics at Aalborg University Denmark. From September 16, 2013, he is full professor and head of the Chair of Power Electronics, Kiel University, Kiel, Germany. He has published several technical papers and patented some of his major scientific contributions. [6] [7] He also published a book in the area of grid connected power electronic converters titled "Grid Converters for Photovoltaic and Wind Power Systems". [8] He is listed in ISI Thomson report "The world's most influential scientific minds" from 2014. He has been awarded with an ERC Consolidator Grant for the project "The Highly Efficient And Reliable smart Transformer (HEART), a new Heart for the Electric Distribution System". [9] He is the founder and convenor of the CIGRE Working Group "Power electronics-based transformer technology, design, grid integration and services provision to the distribution grid". [10]

Awards and recognition

He has been awarded with IEEE PES Working Group Award for the technical report “Microgrid Stability Definitions, Analysis, and Examples". In addition, he has received several awards for his contribution and the most prestigious among them being IEEE Mittelmann Achievement Award in 2018. [11] He is in the list of highly cited researcher in the field of engineering since 2014. [7]

Hassan Farhangi is Professor Emeritus at BCIT School of Energy and Retired Director of Smart Microgrid Applied Research Team (SMART) at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in Burnaby, Canada, and an adjunct professor at the School of Engineering Science at Simon Fraser University. He is known for his pioneering work in the design and development of Canada's first Smart Microgrid on Burnaby Campus of British Columbia Institute of Technology from 2007 onwards, as well as for establishing and leading an NSERC Pan-Canadian Strategic Research Network in Smart Microgrids, consisting of a large number of research-intensive universities (NSMG-Net) in Canada from 2010 to 2016, which trained hundreds of graduate students and published numerous peer-reviewed research papers. Dr. Farhangi retired from his academic and research appointment at British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in Sept 2022 to pursue his personal research interests.

Carlo Alberto Nucci is full professor of Electrical Power Systems at the University of Bologna and the Editor in Chief of the Electric Power System Research Journal. He authored or co-authored over 200 science papers in the field of power electrical engineering. Fellow of IEEE for contributions to analysis and modeling of lightning originated phenomena in power systems and IET. He has also been Chair of the IEEE PowerTech Permanent Steering Committee. Nucci is head of the Power Systems Laboratory at the University of Bologna. Together with prof. F. Rachidi of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne, he has developed a computer code for the appraisal of lightning-induced voltages in electrical network, called LIOV, which is quoted in IEEE standards. Prof. Nucci is also member of the Bologna Science Academy.

Bimal Kumar Bose, also known as B. K. Bose, is an electrical engineer, artificial intelligence researcher, scientist, educator, and currently a professor emeritus of power electronics in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Frede Blaabjerg is a Danish professor at Aalborg University. At Aalborg, he works in the section of Power Electronic Systems of the department of Energy Technology. Blaabjerg's research concerns the applications of power electronics, including adjustable-speed drives, microgrids, photovoltaic systems, and wind turbines. By the number of citations, he is the most cited author of several IEEE journals: IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics.

Sudip K. Mazumder is a UIC Distinguished Professor and is the Director of Laboratory for Energy and Switching-Electronic Systems (LESES) in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), which he joined in 2001. He has over 30 years of professional experience and has held R&D and design positions in leading industrial organizations, and has served as technical consultant for several industries. He also serves as the President of NextWatt LLC since 2008.

Marcelo Godoy Simões is a Brazilian-American scientist engineer, professor in Electrical Engineering in Flexible and Smart Power Systems, at the University of Vaasa. He was with Colorado School of Mines, in Golden, Colorado, for almost 21 years, where he is a Professor Emeritus. He was elevated to Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for applications of artificial intelligence in control of power electronics systems.

Babu Chalamala is currently a Senior Scientist at Sandia National Laboratories. Earlier, he was Head of the Energy Storage Technology and Systems Department and Program Manager for Grid Energy Storage at the laboratory for eight years. Prior to joining Sandia in 2015, he was a Corporate Fellow at MEMC Electronic Materials for five years, where led R&D and product development in grid energy storage technologies. Before that, he founded two startup companies, Indocel Technologies commercializing large format lithium batteries and Stellarray commercializing digital x-ray sources. Earlier, as a research staff member at Motorola and Texas Instruments, he made significant contributions to vacuum microelectronics and flat panel display technologies. In 2024, he was elected as member of the US National Academy of Engineering.

Remus Teodorescu (02.06.1965) is a professor of Energy Technology at Aalborg University. He holds a degree from 1989 in electrical engineering from the Politehnica University of Bucharest in Romania. In 1994 he received a Ph.D. degree in power electronics from the University of Galati in Romania. 

<span class="mw-page-title-main">M. Azizur Rahman</span>

Md. Azizur (Aziz) Rahman was a Bangladeshi born Canadian inventor of modern energy-efficient electric motors that span multiple industry applications. He was an electrical engineer, professor, researcher and scientist. He is internationally recognized as one of the founding innovators of modern power engineering and a pioneer in the development and application of interior permanent magnet motors and associated drive technology-used in the world's first mass-produced hybrid vehicle, the Toyota Prius. Since launching the Prius in 1997, Toyota surpassed global sales of 15 million hybrid vehicles in 2020, all of which use Dr. Rahman's IPM motor drive. His research contributions were broad and adopted in a wide range of electric motor applications ranging from vacuum cleaners, air conditioners, elevators to aircraft.

Noriko Kawakami is a Japanese electrical engineer whose work involves high-voltage direct current storage, transmission, and conversion, including power conversion for wind turbines. She works in the Power Electronics Systems Division of TMEIC, a joint venture of Toshiba and Mitsubishi Electric, as a senior fellow.

In an electrical grid, the short circuit ratio is the ratio of the short circuit apparent power (SCMVA) in the case of a line-line-line-ground (3LG) fault at the location in the grid where some generator is connected to the power rating of the generator itself (GMW). Since the power that can be delivered by the grid varies by location, frequently a location is indicated, for example, at the point of interconnection (POI):

Emenike Chinedozi Ejiogu is a Nigerian Professor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He is the founder of the Laboratory of Industrial Electronics, Power Devices and New Energy System, the current Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and also the Director of the Africa Centre of Excellence For Sustainable Power and Energy Development of the institution.

Nihal Kularatna is a Sri Lankan electronics engineer. He serves as professor at University of Waikato. He has over four and a half decades of contributions to both electronics research. In 2014 he was appointed the Vice Chair of the IEEE DC Energy Efficiency Committee. His research output includes over 160 refereed papers published in esteemed journals and presented at international conferences.
