Marco Nguyen is a French animator, known for his work on French feature films, as well as for his short film Lisa, which served as the pilot for an unproduced television series, and for his award-winning student film Le Building . He directed the music video for Tryo's song "Greenwashing", served as an animation director on the 2011 French film The Rabbi's Cat , and served as an assistant director on the 2019 French film The Swallows of Kabul . In 2017, he received an Annie Award nomination in the Character Animation category for The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales . Nguyen also developed cutscenes for the 2018 video game Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom .

Early life and education

Nguyen attended Gobelins, l'École de l'image. [1] In 2004, he created two short student films - Burp and Hector, the latter of which was co-directed with Antoine Birot, Lisa Pacalet, and Bertrand Piocelle. [2] [3] [4] The following year, he created his group thesis film, Le Building , with Pierre Perifel, Xavier Ramonède, Olivier Staphylas, and Rémi Zaarour. Le Building uses a combination of 2D and 3D animation. [5] On the film's official website, Nguyen is the only one of the filmmakers credited with having contributed animation in both mediums. All three of Nguyen's student films have received screenings in international film festivals, [1] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] and Le Building has won several awards, [17] [11] including Best Undergraduate Animation at the Ottawa International Animation Festival. [18]

Career

Nguyen reteamed with Piocelle to create a two-and-a-half minute pilot for an animated series called Lisa, which was written by Rémy Collignon - the finished work was released in 2009. [1] [19] [20] Lisa was produced by La Station Animation and uses Flash animation. [21] It has been screened in multiple film festivals [22] [23] [24] and was released in issue #54 of Stash DVD magazine. [25] In 2014, Lisa was selected as one of a few shorts to be aired during the special 100th episode of the French animation group Catsuka  [ fr ]'s television series. Nguyen, Piocelle, and Collignon were interviewed as part of the program. [26] [27] [28] The following year, in honor of Catsuka's fifteenth anniversary, Lisa was shown as part of a special screening held at the Studio des Ursulines. [29] [30]

Nguyen worked as an animation director on The Rabbi's Cat , as a character animator on The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales , and as an assistant director on The Swallows of Kabul . [31] [32] [33] He reteamed with Zaarour for The Rabbi's Cat and further collaborated with Zaarour in 2012 to create a music video for the song "Greenwashing" by Tryo - this music video was directed by Nguyen and also featured animation by Patrick Imbert. [31] [34] For The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales, Nguyen earned a 2017 Annie Award nomination. [32]

Nguyen and Piocelle then worked together on cutscenes for the 2018 video game Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom . [35] Nguyen is credited as the game's FMV animation director, while Piocelle is credited as the FMV art director. [36]

Nguyen also worked as animator on Ernest & Celestine and is now animating on the cinema adaptation of The Summit of the Gods .[ citation needed ]

<i>La Détente</i> 2011 French film

La Détente is a 2011 short French film directed by Pierre Ducos and Betrand Bey. It has won several prizes, including Best of show award at SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 and Best Animation award at the Sapporo International Short Film Festival. The film tells the story of a French soldier in World War I who becomes paralyzed with fear while in the trenches. He escapes in his head to an imaginary world where toys fight wars instead of humans. Eric Liu, chair of the Computer animation festival at SIGGRAPH Asia 2011, called La Détente a standout of the festival, saying "This animation short brings a unique and visually stunning computer-generated animation to the audience."

<i>Le Building</i> 2005 French film

Le Building is a 2005 French animated short film directed by a team of final year students at Gobelins, l'École de l'image. The story depicts a series of slapstick accidents that cause destruction to a three-story apartment complex. Le Building's team of five directors is composed of Pierre Perifel and Olivier Staphylas, both of whom went on to become Annie Award-recognized animators at DreamWorks, Xavier Ramonède and Annie award-nominated Marco Nguyen, who have continued their careers with animation credits on various high-profile French productions, and Rémi Zaarour, who has since become a comic book artist, published under the pseudonym Pozla.

Pierre Perifel is a French filmmaker and animator, best known for his work at DreamWorks Animation. He is the director of the feature film The Bad Guys (2022) and the award-winning short films Bilby and Le Building. He is an alumnus of École Émile-Cohl and Gobelins, l'Ecole de l'image.

Olivier Staphylas is a French animator, best known for his work at DreamWorks Animation and for his award-winning student film, Le Building. He joined DreamWorks in 2006 and, within a few years, attained the role of supervising animator on How to Train Your Dragon. His work on 2011's Puss in Boots, supervising the titular character's animation, earned him nominations for an Annie Award and a Visual Effects Society Award. He then served as head of character animation on Penguins of Madagascar. Starting in 2014, he served in that position at Oriental DreamWorks. Staphylas has since left DreamWorks and worked on 2021's Wish Dragon alongside Base FX and Sony Pictures Animation.

Dofus – Book 1: Julith is a 2015 French animated fantasy film directed by Anthony Roux and Jean Jacques Denis, from a screenplay by Roux and Olivier Vannelle. Based on the 2004 video game Dofus and its sequel Wakfu, the film is set in the Krosmoz fictional universe. Dofus – Book 1: Julith was produced by Ankama Animation, and co-produced by France 3 Cinema and Pictanovo. It had its world premiere at the Arras Film Festival on 7 November 2015, before being released in French cinemas on 3 February 2016 where it received a polarised critical reception.

Where Rabbits Come From is a 2023 animation short film, written and directed by Colin Ludvic Racicot. The film stars Sophie Cadieux and Eric Paulhus.

Emmanuel-Alain Raynal is a French animation producer, author and gallery owner. He is mostly known for producing the Palme d'Or-winning short film 27 (2023), the feature film Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman (2022), winner of the Grand Prix at Anima Brussels, and the feature film Chicken for Linda! (2023), winner of the Cristal Award at the 2023 Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
