Peter Rudolf de Vries was a Dutch investigative journalist and crime reporter. His television program Peter R. de Vries, misdaadverslaggever covered high-profile cases and set a Dutch television viewing record. For decades he was famous in the Netherlands for his works in unsolved crimes. He also became internationally renowned for his programme covering the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. In 2005, he founded his own political party which was disbanded soon after.

At the time of his death, Wiersum was a lawyer for state witness Nabil B. in the Marengo case against the so-called 'Mocro Maffia' led by Ridouan Taghi. The murder caused great shock in the world of lawyers; it was termed "an attack on the rule of law".

As of 8 February 2020, he was thought to be the adjutant of Ridouan Taghi and suspected of involvement in several murders. The Netherlands offered €100,000 for information on his whereabouts, an amount equal to information on his boss Taghi. This was the highest amount ever offered by the Dutch government for such information.

She continued with the same portfolio in the Schoof cabinet as State Secretary for Primary and Secondary Education and Equal Opportunities starting in July 2024. In the evening of 6 July 2021, Dutch investigative journalist and crime reporter Peter R. de Vries was shot in the head after leaving the television studio of RTL Boulevard in Amsterdam where he had appeared as a guest. Several bullets were fired at him in the Lange Leidsedwarsstraat, near the Leidseplein, while he was walking to his car. He was taken to the VU University Medical Center in critical condition. De Vries died of his injuries on 15 July.
On 15 January 2022, the murder of Ebrahim Buzhu took place in Chiclana de la Frontera, Spain. Buzhu, a Dutch drug trafficker of Moroccan origin, was shot through the head and his body was found by a passerby who had notified the Civil Guard. The rented vehicle of Ebrahim Buzhu, next to the body, had been lit on fire. Following an investigation, the Spanish police concluded that Buzhu had been kidnapped and severely tortured, prior to being murdered.
