Her first novel, "De grote zaal", appeared in the literary journal Querido in 1953 and was translated into thirteen languages within ten years. During her life around 75,000 copies of "De grote zaal" were sold. She is the founder and leader of the anti-racist political party BIJ1, which was known as Artikel1 ("Article1") until 2017. She previously served on the Amsterdam municipal council from 2018 until 2020, when she resigned to focus on the 2021 general election.
