The World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships is an international swimming championship event organized biennially by World Aquatics for swimmers aged 14–18 years as of 31 December of the year of the competition. It is usually held on odd years. Prior to 2023, the event was known as the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships and was open to female swimmers aged 14–17 and male swimmers aged 15–18 as of 31 December of the year of the competition.
Swimming is an individual or team racing sport that requires the use of one's entire body to move through water. The sport takes place in pools or open water. Competitive swimming is one of the most popular Olympic sports, with varied distance events in butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, and individual medley. In addition to these individual events, four swimmers can take part in either a freestyle or medley relay. A medley relay consists of four swimmers who will each swim a different stroke, ordered as backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle.
Janine Pietsch is a German backstroke swimmer. In the course of her career, she competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, won two gold medals on the short course at the 2006 FINA World Swimming Championships, and four European gold medals.
Melissa Franklin Johnson is an American former competitive swimmer and five-time Olympic gold medalist. She held the world record in the 200-meter backstroke from 2012 to 2019. As a member of the U.S. national swim team, she also held the world records in the 4×100-meter medley relay.
The swimming portion of the 2011 FINA World Championships was held July 24–31 at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai, China. Swimming is one of five aquatic disciplines at the championships.
Olivia Smoliga is a 2X Olympian and American competitive swimmer who specializes in backstroke and freestyle events. She won a record eight gold medals at the 2018 World Championships, becoming the first swimmer, male or female, to win eight or more gold medals in a single FINA World Swimming Championships or FINA World Aquatics Championships. Smoliga is the current American record-holder in the 50-meter backstroke. She is also the current Guinness World Record holder for "most gold medals won at a single FINA World Championships" by an individual swimmer. At the 2016 Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro, she won a gold medal for swimming the backstroke leg in the preliminary heat of the 4x100-meter medley relay.
Ammara Pinto is a Malawian swimmer. She has represented Malawi at the 2016 Summer Olympics and the World Aquatics Championships.
Regan Smith is an American competitive swimmer. She competed at the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games and won eight medals, including two golds. Smith also won nine total medals at the World Championships, including five golds. She was the 2019 world champion in the 200 m backstroke and the 2022 world champion in the 100 m backstroke.
Kaylee Rochelle McKeown is an Australian swimmer and quintuple Olympic gold medalist. She is the reigning Olympic champion in the 100 and 200 metres backstroke. She is the world record holder in the long course 50 metre backstroke, the short course 100 metre backstroke and both the long course and short course 200 metre backstroke. She won gold in both the 100 metre and 200 metre backstroke at both the 2020 and 2024 Olympics. In 2023, she was named as the "Best Female Swimmer of the Year" by World Aquatics, after sweeping gold in all three events of backstroke at all three World Cup legs, held in Berlin, Athens and Budapest in October, 2023.
Osisang Dibech Chilton is a Palauan swimmer. She competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics, in the women's 50 m freestyle.
Daria Andreyevna Vaskina is a Russian swimmer. She competed in the women's 100 metre backstroke at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships.
Ali Galyer is a New Zealand swimmer. Born in Australia before moving to USA when she was three, she had never lived in New Zealand. Her New Zealand citizenship comes from her father. She went to the University of Kentucky where she studied marketing. After she finished at Kentucky, she moved to New Zealand to live and train with the Coast Swim Club elite team.
Marie Khoury is a Lebanese swimmer. She competed in the women's 50 metre freestyle and 50 metre backstroke at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships. She represented Lebanon at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships held in Budapest, Hungary. She competed in the women's 50 metre freestyle and women's 50 metre backstroke events.
Sophia Catherine Diagne is a Senegalese swimmer. She competed in the women's 50 metre backstroke at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships held in Gwangju, South Korea. In 2019, she also represented Senegal at the 2019 African Games held in Rabat, Morocco. She competed in the women's 50 metre backstroke, women's 50 metre butterfly and women's 50 metre freestyle events.
Lena Grabowski is an Austrian swimmer. She competed in the women's 200 metre backstroke at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships. In 2021, she competed in the 2020 Olympics.
Nathania van Niekerk is a South African swimmer. She competed in the women's 200 metre backstroke at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships and she did not advance to the semi-finals.
Claire Curzan is an American competitive swimmer and Olympian. Specialising in multiple events, she earned an Olympic silver medal in the 4×100 meter medley relay in the 2020 Summer Olympics by swimming the preliminary butterfly leg. She holds junior world records in the long course 50 meter freestyle and 100 meter butterfly and the short course 50 meter butterfly and 100 meter butterfly. She also holds American records in the short course 50 meter backstroke and 50 meter butterfly, and formerly held the American record in the 100 yard butterfly. She currently swims for the Virginia Cavaliers.
