Maria Balinska (born 1960) is an American journalist and author who is the Executive Director of the US-UK Fulbright Commission. [2]

Born in New Jersey, US, Balinska joined the Fulbright Commission after serving as part of the launch team for The Conversation , later the Managing Editor and subsequently Editor-in-Chief. [3]

Balinska attended 10 schools in five countries before attending Princeton University. According to her, she became interested in journalism after the fall of Communism, reporting on the transformation of Poland as a freelance journalist. [4] She spent a decade as a radio producer and then Editor World Current Affairs at BBC. [5] [6] In 2010 she was a Nieman Fellow. [7]

In 2011, she founded Latitude News. [1] [8] In 2008 she published The Bagel, which presents a history of the bagel, tracing its roots from ancient Rome to Poland to its flourishing in America. [9] [10] [11]

Lender's introduced frozen bagels and sold the first packaged bagels in supermarkets, eventually becoming the world's biggest bagel producer. The company was sold to Kraft Foods in 1984. Bagel toast is a sandwich commonly eaten in Israel. It is composed of a pressed, toasted bagel filled with vegetables and cheese and is grilled on a sandwich toaster or panini press. Davidovich Bagels is a popular bagel brand produced by Davidovich Bakery, a wholesale company in New York City. It is widely regarded as the only genuinely "hand-rolled" bagel on the wholesale market. While the 20th century saw a universal move by bagel companies towards the machine-automated forming of bagels, Davidovich continued to employ artisans to handcraft and kettle-boil bagels in the Viennese tradition. This practice was popularized in New York bakeries as New York City emerged as the bagel-making capital of the world.

An obwarzanek krakowski is a braided ring-shaped bread that is boiled and sprinkled with salt and sesame or poppy seeds before being baked. Traditionally sold from street carts, it is a popular snack in the Polish city of Kraków, where it has the status of a regional food with protected geographical indication.
