Maria Eklund (born 1973) is a Russian-born Swedish conductor. In 2005, she became the first woman to conduct an orchestra at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, breaking the barriers of what so far was a strictly male area of expertise. Eklund was born in Moscow in a family of Russian intelligentsia. Her paternal grandmother was an accomplished pianist who graduated from The Moscow Conservatoire at the same time as the pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy. Her paternal grandfather is a physics scientist who worked at The Kurtchatov Institute in Moscow before relocating to Switzerland. She gained a university degree in choir conducting and pedagogical training in subjects such as conducting at Master level at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, in the class of Viktor Krasnoshekov, and Gnesin's Music Academy, in the class of Galina Rozdestvenskaya (1992-1997).
She took a postgraduate course at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm in orchestral and choir conducting (1997-2000), in the class of Anders Eby and Jing Wang.
Eklund has conducted the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Gävle Symphony Orchestra, Västerås Sinfonietta, the Norrland Opera Orchestra, Nordic Chamber Orchestra, Folk Opera, Stockholm Strauss Orchestra, Swedish Wind Ensemble, Linköping Wind Ensemble, the Royal Swedish Navy Band, the Bolshoi Theatre, the Arena di Verona, Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, Russian State Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Sinfonietta, the China National Opera, Krasnoyarsk Opera Theatre, the Ulyanovsk Symphony Orchestra, Tomsk Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra "Moscow Philharmonic", the Russian State Symphonic Capella, Brno Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of the Royal Academy in London and others.
Since 2012, Eklund has been actively involved in KUPP – a unique professional body for female conductors in Sweden which works towards gender equality within the profession of classical orchestra conducting. This association publishes annual reports on statistics of male and female soloist and conductors in Sweden, touching the areas of Swedish vs foreign musicians and agencies represented in classical music life of Sweden. Due to their work a vast amount of questions moved into public discussions in media and political venues, including regular meetings with the leaders of the Departments of Culture and personally with the Minister of Culture in Sweden. Eklund lives with her husband and son on the island of Lidingo within the city limits of Stockholm, Sweden.

John Neal Axelrod is an American conductor. Axelrod was elected Artistic and musical director of the Royal Symphony Orchestra of Seville in 2014 and is Principal Conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano, "Giuseppe Verdi", also known as "LaVerdi". Between 2009 and 2013, Axelrod was music director of l'Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, based in Nantes and Angers, France; and from 2009 to 2011, Axelrod served as music director of "Hollywood In Vienna" Gala Concerts with the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra, Vienna. He has also served as music director and Chief Conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra from 2004 to 2009, and from 2001 to 2009 as Principal Guest Conductor of Sinfonietta Cracovia.

Gabala International Music Festival is an annual festival of classical music held every summer beginning in 2009 in Gabala, Azerbaijan. The festival is organised with the support of Heydar Aliyev Foundation at the initiative of the rector of the Baku Academy of Music Farhad Badalbeyli and conductor Dmitri Yablonski. At this festival, musicians perform in the open air. Participants have included musicians from Europe, the US and Israel, as well as musicians from republics of the former USSR. In 2009, a contest of young pianists was held at the same time with the musical festival. Jazz and mugham evenings were held along with classical music concerts. In 2010, the festival was held on August. General director of UNESCO Irina Bokova was in the opening ceremony of the festival. The festival began with the performance of overture from Uzeyir Hajibeyov's "Koroglu" opera as in 2009. Opening ceremony of the festival was charged to Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Such musicians as Dmitri Yablonski, Yuri Bashmet, Khloe Khanslip and other Azerbaijani and foreign musicians took part in the festival. In 2011, the festival lasted from July 15 to August 5.

Black conductors are musicians of African, Caribbean, African-American ancestry and other members of the African diaspora who are musical ensemble leaders who direct classical music performances, such as an orchestral or choral concerts, or jazz ensemble big band concerts by way of visible gestures with the hands, arms, face and head. Conductors of African descent are rare, as the vast majority are male and Caucasian.
