The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is the United States federal government's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical significance or "great artistic value". A property listed in the National Register, or located within a National Register Historic District, may qualify for tax incentives derived from the total value of expenses incurred in preserving the property.
A National Historic Landmark (NHL) is a building, district, object, site, or structure that is officially recognized by the United States government for its outstanding historical significance. Only some 2,500, or roughly three percent, of over 90,000 places listed on the country's National Register of Historic Places are recognized as National Historic Landmarks.
First Landing State Park offers recreational opportunities at Cape Henry in the independent city of Virginia Beach, Virginia. As the first planned state park of Virginia, First Landing is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Seashore State Park Historic District. A portion of the park is listed as a National Natural Landmark as part of the Seashore Natural Area.

In the law regulating historic districts in the United States, a contributing property or contributing resource is any building, object, or structure which adds to the historical integrity or architectural qualities that make the historic district significant. Government agencies, at the state, national, and local level in the United States, have differing definitions of what constitutes a contributing property but there are common characteristics. Local laws often regulate the changes that can be made to contributing structures within designated historic districts. The first local ordinances dealing with the alteration of buildings within historic districts was enacted in Charleston, South Carolina in 1931.

Listed properties generally fall into one of five categories, though there are special considerations for other types of properties which do not fit into these five broad categories or fit into more specialized subcategories. The five general categories for NRHP properties are: building, district, object, site, and structure.
The Midtown Historic District in Midtown Atlanta, Georgia is a historic district that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. It is roughly contiguous with what the Midtown Alliance organization calls the "Midtown Neighborhood", which is only part of the much larger Midtown neighborhood. The Midtown Local Historic District organization seeks to designate most of the current historic district as a "local historic district", which unlike simply being listed on the National Register, provides tools for preservation of the historic architecture.
There are 75 properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Albany, New York, United States. Six are additionally designated as National Historic Landmarks (NHLs), the most of any city in the state after New York City. Another 14 are historic districts, for which 20 of the listings are also contributing properties. Two properties, both buildings, that had been listed in the past but have since been demolished have been delisted; one building that is also no longer extant remains listed.

Cokesbury, historically known as Cokesburg, is an unincorporated community located on the border of Clinton and Tewksbury townships in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. It was named after two Methodist bishops, Coke and Asbury. The Cokesbury Historic District was listed on the state and national registers of historic places in 1997.
The Bismarck Cathedral Area Historic District, also known as The Hill, is a historic district that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). A first 27.3-acre (11.0 ha) area was NRHP-listed in 1980. The original listing included 47 contributing buildings, including the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit. The district was increased by 15 acres (6.1 ha) with 40 contributing buildings and one contributing site in 1997. The district was further changed in 2010 by subtraction of some buildings and properties, and by the addition of others.
The Provo East Central Historic District is a 260-acre (110 ha) historic district in Provo, Utah, United States that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
The Marianna Commercial Historic District encompasses the historic civic and commercial heart of Marianna, Arkansas, the county seat of Lee County. It comprises two blocks of Main Street and two blocks of Poplar Street, which cross at the northwest corner of Court Square, a city park where the Gen. Robert E. Lee Monument is found, and extends south to include a few buildings on Liberty Street.
The New Hampton Historic District is a historic district in the village of New Hampton, Lebanon Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 6, 1998, for its significance in architecture, commerce, education, transportation, and community development from c. 1780 to 1929. It includes 42 contributing buildings, six contributing sites, and four contributing structures located along Musconetcong River Road.
The Heritage Hill Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located north of downtown Burlington, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The area is primarily a residential neighborhood on the hill north of the central business district. Several churches act as a buffer and provide a transition from the residential area and the commercial areas in the valley. At the time of its nomination there were 141 structures in the district. The breakdown of their uses at that time included: 113 residences, 10 churches or religious use facilities, 7 public or government buildings, and 11 commercial structures. The district also includes North Hill Park, which has been in continuous use since the city was founded in 1836 and is one of the two oldest city parks in Burlington.
The College Green Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. At the time of its nomination it consisted of 47 resources, which included 37 contributing buildings, one contributing site, and nine non-contributing buildings. This neighborhood in the central part of the city surrounds a square-block park called College Green, from which it derives its name. The park, which is the contributing site, is found on the earliest maps of Iowa City. While the earliest houses in the district were built in the 1860s, most were constructed between 1890 and 1920. No one architectural style dominates here, but the district contains a variety of styles that were popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This is one of three areas in the city where the fraternities and sororities associated with the University of Iowa are located. The Thomas C. Carson House (1875), which now houses a sorority, is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Sand Hills Historic District in Augusta, Georgia is a historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. The district included 334 contributing buildings and a contributing site in a 231 acres (0.93 km2) area roughly bounded by Monte Sano and North View Aves., Mount Auburn St., Johns Rd., and the Augusta Country Club.
