Mariken van Nieumeghen is a 1974 Dutch drama film directed by Jos Stelling. It is based on the 16th-century text Mariken van Nieumeghen . It was entered into the 1975 Cannes Film Festival. [1]
Cast and crew consisted of amateurs. As most of them had daytime jobs, the film was mostly shot over weekends. Ronnie Montagne, who had studied pedagogy, played Mariken. The one-eyed Moenen was played by Arielle Bailleux, a young physicist. After shooting this film they both went to the United States to complete their doctorate degrees at Stanford University, California, and never acted again. [2]

Mariken van Nieumeghen is a miracle play recorded in a Middle Dutch text from the early 16th century. The protagonist Mariken of the story spends seven years with the devil, after which she is miraculously released. The oldest edition dates from 1515 and was printed by Willem Vorsterman. Linguistic evidence suggests it was written by a poet from an Antwerp chamber of rhetoric.

The film depicts a friendship between two men who spend their childhood together in a remote Alpine village and reconnect later as adults. The title is a reference to the concept in Buddhism and ancient Indian cosmology that the world is composed of nine mountains and eight seas, specifically eight concentric circular mountain ranges separated from one another by eight seas, with the ninth and tallest mountain, Mount Meru, at the center.
