Cocolo is a term used in the Hispanic Caribbean to refer to Afro-Caribbean migrant descendants. It is mainly used to refer to the migrants in San Pedro de Macorís, Puerto Plata, the Samaná Peninsula, and other Afro-descendants who arrived in the Atlantic coastal areas of the country in the late 1800s and early 1900s. At the time these migrants were culturally distinct from the lighter Dominicans who primarily lived in the northern interior of the country and had a higher degree of colonial European ancestry.

Its national director, Belkys Reyes is a "Miss trainer" who has prepared models like Amelia Vega.

Señorita República Dominicana 1964 was held on January 31, 1964. 12 candidates are competed for the national crown. The winner represented the Dominican Republic at the Miss Universe 1964. The first runner up will enter Miss International 1964. Only the 16 province entered. On the top 6 they showed their swimsuit and answered questions so they could go to the top 3. In the top 3 they would answer more questions. There are only 12 delegates due to the reason low economy in each province and the country.

The Miss Tierra República Dominicana 2004 pageant was held on June 20, 2004. This year, 25 candidates competed for the national crown. The winner represented the Dominican Republic at the Miss Earth 2004, which was held in Manila.
