Mario Cecchini is a Canadian media and sports executive. He has served as commissioner of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League since 2023, and previously was president of the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. He has worked for multiple media companies, including 15 years for Telemedia Radio.

Media

Cecchini had a 15-year career with Telemedia Radio, where he was of vice president of sales and marketing and executive vice-president in charge of the company's Ontario stations. In 2002, he became the vice president of sales for the TQS Television Network. In 2003, he was appointed president and chief operating officer of Zoom Media. [1] He then served as a vice-president of Corus Québec. In 2011 he became the senior vice-president, sales and marketing at Astral Radio. [2] In 2013, Cecchini joined Corus Entertainment as president of Corus Media Quebec. In this role, he oversaw the company's radio and television stations in Eastern Ontario as well as French-language cable television assets and Ottawa radio stations acquired from Bell/Astral. [3] In 2018 he started his own consulting firm. [4]

Canadian football

In 2020, Cecchini was named president of the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. [5] Under Cecchini's leadership, the Alouettes saw increased corporate sponsorship and average attendance rose from 13,063 in 2021 to 17,683 in 2022. In December 2022, the estate of Sid Spiegel, which had controlling interest in the team, informed Cecchini that his contract would not be renewed. [6] On February 14, 2023, the Canadian Football League took control of the Alouettes and Cecchini returned to the team as interim president. [7] The team was sold to Pierre Karl Péladeau on March 10, 2023, and Cecchini stepped down as president on April 6, 2023. [8] [9]

Junior ice hockey

On March 7, 2023, Cecchini was named commissioner of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He succeeded 37-year commissioner Gilles Courteau who resigned amid political scrutiny over hazing in hockey. Cecchini took office on May 8, 2023. [10] In December 2023, the QMJHL changed its name to the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League. [11] [12]

The 1969–70 QMJHL season was the first season in the history of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Eleven teams formed the new league, ten from Quebec and one from Ontario. Eight teams came from the Quebec Junior Hockey League, the Drummondville Rangers, Quebec Remparts, Saint-Jérôme Alouettes, Shawinigan Bruins, Sherbrooke Castors, Sorel Éperviers, Trois-Rivières Ducs and Verdun Maple Leafs; two from the Metropolitan Montreal Junior Hockey League, the Rosemont National and Laval Saints; and the Cornwall Royals from the Central Junior A Hockey League. The teams played 56 games each in the schedule.

Gilles Courteau is a Canadian former ice hockey administrator. He served as president of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) 1986 to 2023, and was a vice-president of the Canadian Hockey League. During his tenure as president, the QMJHL expanded from 10 teams in Quebec only, to 18 teams including Atlantic Canada. He implemented English as the language of instruction, and sought for the league to provide education and player assistance. He previously worked for the Trois-Rivières Draveurs, the Quebec Remparts, the Quebec Nordiques, and was inducted into the Hockey Québec Hall of Fame in 2016.

Mario Pouliot is a Canadian former ice hockey coach and general manager. He began coaching in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) as an assistant coach with the Saint-Hyacinthe Laser. He later coached the Collège Antoine-Girouard Gaulois for eight seasons, and once held the Quebec AAA Midget Hockey League record for the most career wins by a head coach. He also led the Gaulois to the finals of the 2003 Air Canada Cup for the Canadian national Midget AAA championship. He later served two terms as an assistant coach for the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies around a head-coaching stint for the Baie-Comeau Drakkar. During this time, he was chosen as head coach of Team Quebec at the 2011 World U-17 Hockey Challenge.

The 2021 Montreal Alouettes season was the 54th season for the team in the Canadian Football League and their 66th overall. The Alouettes qualified for the playoffs on November 5, 2021, after the Hamilton Tiger-Cats defeated the BC Lions in week 14. The team's season was ended by the same Tiger-Cats following a 23–12 East Semi-Final loss in Hamilton.

However, after defeating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the East Semi-Final, the team lost to the Toronto Argonauts in the East Final.
