Maritzburg FC is a South African football (soccer) club based in Pietermaritzburg.
Durban Municipals (founded 1953) had been a leading club in Natal for some time when the 1967 season got underway. They had come agonizingly close to promotion twice before. First, qualifying for the 1963 promotion play-offs only to miss promotion by a single point vis-a-vis Hellenic, and again in 1966, losing the southern play-off final against Westview Apollon from Port Elizabeth. The club (still known as Durban Municipals) would be playing their home games in neighbouring Pietermaritzburg to avoid competition for support with the three Durban teams in the top division. (Pietermaritzburg, on the other hand, had been without a professional soccer team since Maritzburg Celtic found themselves hopelessly out of their depth in NFL's inaugural season in 1959, folding after an abysmal run in which they failed to win a single game.) The 1967 season unfolded very much like the previous year's. The Municipals won the provincial league again, ahead of Escombe, to qualify for the Southern section of the play-offs. There they recorded three wins and one draw against East London Celtic and Peninsula FC of Cape Town, earning the right to a two-legged showdown with the 13th placed team in the NFL. Their opponents? None other than last season's nemesis, Westview Apollon. The Municipals lost 4–6 on aggregate, despite a first-leg hat-trick from future star defender Mike James. However, in a final twist, Westview Apollon withdrew from the NFL, and so Durban Municipals were promoted anyway. Attendance figures following the move to Pietermaritzburg had been encouraging, and it was decided to rename the club accordingly. They took the field in the NFL in 1968 as Maritzburg F.C.. In 1969, only their second season in the top flight, they won the Castle Cup. Maritzburg defeated favourites Cape Town City 2–1 with goals from Bobby Chalmers and Peter Greene. This was the first final to go to extra time. Their most successful league campaigns were 1970, 1974 and 1975, all ending with a third-place finish.
Pietermaritzburg is the capital and second-largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It was founded in 1838 and is currently governed by the Msunduzi Local Municipality. Its Zulu name umGungundlovu is the name used for the Umgungundlovu District Municipality. Pietermaritzburg is popularly called Maritzburg in Afrikaans, English and Zulu alike, and often informally abbreviated to PMB. It is a regionally important industrial hub, producing aluminium, timber and dairy products, as well as the main economic hub of Umgungundlovu District Municipality. The public sector is a major employer in the city due to local, district and provincial government offices located here.
Durban Stars is a semi-professional association football club based in the Chatsworth suburb of Durban, in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. The club was founded in July 2003, when the businessman Phindani Nene acquired the Castle League franchise of the National First Division club Moja United from Pietermaritzburg, and thereby established his new club Durban Stars FC, directly into the second level of South African football. The club played at that level from 2003–09, before being relegated to Vodacom League.

He is one of the few footballing coaches in the country to have won winners medals for both the PSL league title and the Mvela Golden League. He has also coached South Africa at under-20 level.
Siphiwe Ignatius Mkhonza was a South African soccer player who played as a centre-back. He played club football for Bloemfontein Celtic, Ria Stars, Lamontville Golden Arrows, Kaizer Chiefs, SuperSport United, Maritzburg United, AmaZulu and Black Leopards and won seven caps for the South Africa national team.
Fadluraghman "Fadlu" Davids is a retired South African football (soccer) striker who last played for Premier Soccer League club Maritzburg United. He was twice the highest goalscorer in the South African National First Division.
The 2008–09 Premier Soccer League season was the thirteenth since its establishment. Supersport United were the defending champions, having won their first Premier Soccer League title on the final day of the previous season. The campaign began in August 2008, ended in May 2009. A total of 16 teams contested in the league, 14 of which contested in the 2007–08 season, and two of which were have been promoted from the National First Division.

At first the NFL received stiff opposition from the SAFA, the amateur governing body which controlled the major football grounds in the county. The SAFA was a member of FIFA at the time.
The 2010 Telkom Knockout was a football (soccer) knockout competition which comprised the 16 teams in the South African Premier Soccer League. It was the 19th tournament, and the fifth under the Telkom Knockout name. The tournament is effectively South Africa's league cup, as entry is open only to clubs in the top league. The cup is usually played in the first half of the season. The tournament began on 23 October, and it ended on 4 December 2010. Kaizer Chiefs won their 9th title, by defeating Orlando Pirates 3–0 in the final at Soccer City.
Robert Barry Lionel "Bobby" Chalmers is a former association football forward who played professionally for the Rhodesia national team and various clubs in South Africa, where he scored 303 goals in all competitions, making him the all-time top goalscorer in the now-defunct South African National Football League. Chalmers captained the Rhodesian team during its unsuccessful attempt to qualify for the 1970 FIFA World Cup, and was its leading goalscorer. In a profile published in 1980, Chalmers was described by journalist Glen Byrom as a "perfect gentleman and sportsman ... Southern Africa's crown prince of soccer". Chalmers died in Durban in 2022.

Siphesihle Ndlovu is a South African professional soccer player who plays as a midfielder for Premier Soccer League side Orlando Pirates and the South Africa national team. An academy graduate of Maritzburg United, he made his professional debut in 2016 and went on to make over 80 appearances for the club. During the 2017–18 season, he helped the club to record-high fourth-place finish in the league and was rewarded for his form with the Young Player of the Season award. At the end of the following season, he joined Orlando Pirates. He is a fan favorite in Pietermaritzburg and his nickname is Mbesuma.

The 2019 Telkom Knockout was the 38th edition and final edition of the Telkom Knockout, a South African cup competition comprising the 16 teams in the Premier Soccer League. It took place between October and December 2019 and was won by Mamelodi Sundowns.
