Marnie Stern (born March 18, 1976) is an American musician, singer-songwriter, and guitarist. She has garnered acclaim for her technical skill and tapping style of guitar play. [1] [2] Stern was a member of The 8G Band from the show Late Night with Seth Meyers .

Musical career

In early 2007, Kill Rock Stars released Stern's debut CD, In Advance of the Broken Arm . It was well received by critics, and most favorably by The New York Times , citing it as "The year's most exciting rock 'n' roll album." [3] In mid 2007, Stern toured the U.S. and UK with Hella's Zach Hill and The Advantage's Robby Moncrieff, in support of her debut album. [4] In 2008, Stern was named one of Venus Zine's "Greatest Female Guitarists of All Time", Spring 2008 issue [5] and was nominated "Female Artist of the Year" and "Punk Album of the Year" for the 2008 Plug Music Awards. [6]

Stern's second album, This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That , was released October 7, 2008. [7] Upon release, it garnered the title of "Best New Music" as well as No. 44 on "The 50 Best Albums of 2008" from Pitchfork Media. [8] Stern toured Europe and the U.S. in support of This Is It with former U.S. Maple guitarist Mark Shippy, bassist recruit Malia James, and a varying line-up of drummers.

Backed by bass player Nithin Kalvakota and former Tera Melos drummer Vincent Rogers, Stern spent most of 2010 and 2011 touring North America, Europe, and Australia in support of her self-titled third album. Highlights include several winter festivals in Europe as well as support dates with the Flaming Lips. She was chosen by Les Savy Fav to perform at the ATP Nightmare Before Christmas festival that they co-curated in December 2011 in Minehead, England. [9] In 2011, Stern was named one of Elle Magazines "12 Greatest Female Electric Guitarists", [10] and was chosen as a voter on a panel of top guitarists and other experts for the Rolling Stone Magazine "100 Greatest Guitarists List". [11] In 2012, she was named No. 87 on the Spin Magazine list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time". [12]

In December 2012, it was announced that her next album The Chronicles of Marnia would be released on Kill Rock Stars. [13] The title track of the album was debuted that same week on the website of Spin Magazine in an article about Stern. [14] On March 4, 2013, The Chronicles of Marnia was made available exclusively on NPR's First Listen. [15] During 2013's SXSW she was featured in ABC News' 7 Emerging Artists on the Rise article. [16] Stern started off as a fill-in guitar player for Late Night with Seth Meyers ' 8G Band when bandleader Fred Armisen was absent, and then became a full time member of the Late Night house band until 2022. [17]

In August 2023, Stern announced her return with a song titled "Plain Speak". It features on her fifth studio album, The Comeback Kid , which was released on November 3 via Joyful Noise Recordings. [18] Rolling Stone named Marnie Stern as one of "The 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time". [19]

Stern has cited many musical influences that contribute to her sound, including Hella, King Crimson, [20] Lightning Bolt, Deerhoof, Erase Errata, Yoko Ono, Don Caballero, U.S. Maple, Royal Trux, Television, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, and Talking Heads.

After graduating from Los Angeles's Otis College of Art and Design, she moved to New York City to begin an art career. There, she formed Sonic Youth with Thurston Moore in 1981. They would subsequently release nine studio albums on the major label DGC Records, beginning with Goo in 1990. Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and activist. Her career has spanned over 40 years. Her album She's So Unusual (1983) was the first debut album by a female artist to achieve four top-five hits on the Billboard Hot 100—"Girls Just Want to Have Fun", "Time After Time", "She Bop", and "All Through the Night"—and earned Lauper the Best New Artist award at the 27th Annual Grammy Awards in 1985. Her success continued with the soundtrack for the motion picture The Goonies (1985) and her second record True Colors (1986). Lucinda Gayl Williams is an American singer-songwriter and a solo guitarist. She recorded her first two albums, Ramblin' on My Mind (1979) and Happy Woman Blues (1980), in a traditional country and blues style that received critical praise but little public or radio attention. In 1988, she released her third album, Lucinda Williams, to widespread critical acclaim. In Advance of the Broken Arm is the debut album by Marnie Stern, released in 2007. Kill Rock Stars handled the CD release, and the vinyl with a shorter track listing came out on Rampage Records. The title comes from a work of art of the same title by artist Marcel Duchamp.

This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That is the second album by Marnie Stern, released on October 7, 2008 on Kill Rock Stars. The album's title comes from an Alan Watts quote in his work On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are (1966), which was in turn a quotation from James Broughton's The Bard and the Harper (1965). Broughton also used the quote in his art film This Is It (1971).

The Chronicles of Marnia is the fourth album by Marnie Stern, released on March 19, 2013, on Kill Rock Stars.

The 8G Band is the house band for Late Night with Seth Meyers. The band is led by Saturday Night Live alumnus Fred Armisen. He assembled the 8G Band, named for the studio where the show is taped, just two weeks before the test show. He texted friends Seth Jabour, Syd Butler, and Eli Janney, then found first drummer Kimberly Thompson through an audition. Jabour and Butler are members of the Brooklyn rock and roll band Les Savy Fav, and Butler also owns Frenchkiss Records. Guitarist Marnie Stern later joined as well.

The Comeback Kid is the fifth studio album by American musician Marnie Stern, released on November 3, 2023, through Joyful Noise Recordings. It is her first album in 10 years, following 2013's The Chronicles of Marnia. The album received acclaim from critics.
