Greenland is the world's largest island, located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. It is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Though physiographically a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with Europe for more than a millennium. The majority of its residents are Inuit, whose ancestors migrated from Alaska through Northern Canada, gradually settling across the island by the 13th century.
Nuuk is the capital and largest city of Greenland. Nuuk is the seat of government and the country's largest cultural and economic centre. The major cities from other countries closest to the capital are Iqaluit and St. John's in Canada and Reykjavík in Iceland. Nuuk contains almost a third of Greenland's population and its tallest building. Nuuk is also the seat of government for the Sermersooq municipality. In January 2020, it had a population of 18,326.
Denmark, officially the Kingdom of Denmark, is a Nordic state in Northern Europe and the North Atlantic. In Europe, it forms Denmark proper, which is the southernmost of the Scandinavian countries, consisting of a peninsula, Jutland, and an archipelago of 443 named islands, with the largest being Zealand, Funen and the North Jutlandic Island. The islands are characterised by flat, arable land and sandy coasts, low elevation and a temperate climate. Denmark lies southwest of Sweden and south of Norway, and is bordered to the south by Germany. In the North Atlantic, it consists of two autonomous territories: the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
Ilulissat, formerly Jakobshavn or Jacobshaven, is the municipal seat and largest town of the Avannaata municipality in western Greenland, located approximately 350 km (220 mi) north of the Arctic Circle. With the population of 4,670 as of 2020, it is the third-largest city in Greenland, after Nuuk and Sisimiut. The city is home to almost as many sled-dogs as people.
The Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC), formerly Inuit Circumpolar Conference, is a multinational non-governmental organization (NGO) and Indigenous Peoples' Organization (IPO) representing the 180,000 Inuit, Yupik, and Chukchi peoples living in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Chukotka (Russia). ICC was ECOSOC-accredited and was granted special consultative status at the UN in 1983.
Kujalleq is a municipality on the southern tip of Greenland, operational from 1 January 2009. The administrative center of the municipality is in Qaqortoq. The municipality consists of the former municipalities of southern Greenland, each named after the biggest settlement:
Qaasuitsup was a municipality in Greenland, operational from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2017. As of January 2013 its population was 17,498. The administrative centre of the municipality was in Ilulissat. The municipality consisted of the former municipalities of western and northern Greenland, each named after the biggest settlement:
Qaarsut Airport is an airport in Qaarsut, a settlement on the Nuussuaq Peninsula in the Qaasuitsup municipality in northwestern Greenland. It is a primary airport with a gravel runway, capable of serving STOL aircraft of Air Greenland in all seasons. There is a small cafeteria in the tiny arrivals/departures hall. It is connected by a 4 km (2.5 mi) gravel road to Qaarsut and is 13.5 nautical miles northwest of Uummannaq.
KANUKOKA is the national association of Greenland's municipalities, led by Palle Jeremiassen. The name is an acronym formed from the first two letters of each of the constituent words of the organization's name in the Greenlandic language.
Maliina Abelsen is the General Manager for Arctic Winter Games 2016 and a former Greenlandic politician and MP for the party Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA), holding the position of the Minister for Finance in the Government of Greenland, in office from March 2011. Between June 2009 and March 2011, Abelsen held the position of the Minister for Social Affairs in the Government of Greenland.
Hermann Berthelsen is a Greenlandic politician and affiliated with the Siumut party. As of July 2010, Berthelsen is the mayor of Sisimiut, a town in central-western Greenland, and the administrative center of the Qeqqata municipality.
Qaqortuatsiaq is a former settlement on the northern shore of Appat Island in the Qaasuitsup municipality in northwestern Greenland. Its ruins lay against the Torsukattak Strait of Uummannaq Fjord.
Atassut is a liberal-conservative, unionist political party in Greenland. Founded on 29 April 1978, Atassut is an established partner of the Liberal Party of Denmark.
Naja Abelsen is a Danish-Greenlandic painter and illustrator. Much of her art is inspired by the myths and sagas of Greenland. In addition to her work as a book illustrator, she has designed 18 stamps for Post Greenland.
Elisabeth Johansen was a Greenlandic midwife and politician. She was the first certified midwife in the country, as well as the first woman to attain a political office in Greenland. She was the first women appointed Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog.
Suka K. Frederiksen was a Greenlandic politician. Frederiksen was a member of the Inatsisartut and had held the position of Minister of Independence and Agriculture and Foreign Affairs.
Vera Leth is a Greenlandic civil servant who has been the County Council Ombudsman for the Parliament of Greenland since 1997.
Ivalo Abelsen is a Greenlandic teacher and artist, most known for a series of postage stamps she produced depicting animal, human and geometric designs relevant to Greenland's history.
Avannaata (English: The Northern, is a new municipality of Greenland created January 1, 2018 from the bulk of the former Qaasuitsup municipality. It encompasses an area of 522,700 km² and has 10,726 inhabitants.
Qeqertalik is a new municipality of Greenland created in 2018 from four southern regions of the former Qaasuitsup Municipality.
