Martha Rivera-Garrido, also credited as Martha Rivera (born January 19, 1961), is a writer from the Dominican Republic. She is part of the Dominican literary cohort named the 80s Generation. [1] Rivera-Garrido was known primarily as a poet prior to the release of her debut novel, He Olvidado tu Nombre(I Have Forgotten Your Name). [2] The novel won the International Novel Prize of the Casa de Teatro in 1996. In 2013, a street in Santo Domingo was named in her honour.

Life

Rivera-Garrido was born in Santo Domingo. She is the great-granddaughter of the Dominican poet Gastón Fernando Deligne  [ es ]. [3] She studied Political Science at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo. She has lived for long periods in the United States in New York City and Miami, as well as in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I Have Forgotten Your Name (He Olvidado tu Nombre) is Rivera-Garrido's first and only novel. It won the Casa de Teatro International Narrative Award in 1996. The first edition of the book was released in 1997. The novel was translated to English by Mary Berg, this translation was released by White Pine Press on June 1, 2004. [6] A second edition was released in 2018. [7]

Salcedo is the capital city of the Hermanas Mirabal Province in the Dominican Republic. It is the birthplace of the Dominican heroines, the Mirabal sisters, who died in the struggle against the dictator Rafael Trujillo. A museum in the town commemorates three of sisters; it was tended to by the remaining sister, Bélgica (Dedé) Mirabal, until her death on February 1, 2014.

Miguel D. Mena is a Dominican writer, poet, essayist and publisher. He studied sociology in the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, where he graduated in 1986 with the thesis Ciudad, espacio y poder en Republica Dominicanca. He continued his research on the city of Santo Domingo in Germany, where he has been living since 1990. His PhD from the Free University of Berlin has been recently published under the title: Iglesia, Espacio y Poder: Santo Domingo (1498–1521) Experiencia Fundacional del Nuevo Mundo. He has also written a collections of essays about the urban cuestion in the Dominican Republic and hundred of articles for newspapers and magazines about contemporary aspects of the Dominican capital. He has also written extensively about Dominican literature and especially about Vanguardism in the Dominican literature. He has been one of the leading figures in independent publishing since the mid-1980s in Dominican Republic. He is now at the head of “Cielonaranja Ediciones”

Miss Mundo Dominicana 2011 was held September 20, 2011, in Renaissance Auditorio de Festival del Hotel Jaragua, Santo Domingo. The Miss Mundo Dominicana winner represented the Dominican Republic in Miss World 2011, the Miss RD Internacional entered Miss International 2011, Miss Supranational RD entered Miss Supranational 2012, and the Miss Tourism Queen RD entered Miss Tourism Queen International 2011. The first runner up entered the Reinado Internacional del Café 2012. The winner was crowned by Sofinel Báez, Miss International Dominicana 2010.

Juan Andújar is a Dominican contemporary artist. He is known for his modern paintings, often inspired in the ocean and rural life.

Luis René Canaán Rojas is a medic, marine and politician from the Dominican Republic. He is Senator for the province of Hermanas Mirabal and was elected in 2006, and re-elected in 2010 and 2016; and has served in the Dominican Navy.

Virginia Elena Ortea, who wrote under the pen name Elena Kennedy, was a journalist and writer, credited as the first Dominican Republic female journalist and one of the first women novelists in the country. She was also the writer of the only known zarzuela from the Dominican Republic. There is a street and a school named in her honor in the country.

Edna Garrido Ramírez, also known as Edna Garrido de Boggs, was a Dominican educator, researcher and folklorist. She is considered a pioneer in the studies of Dominican folklore, for her field research on dances, sayings, riddles, oral tales, popular songs, children's games and other manifestations of folklore and ethnomusicology. She founded the first Dominican Folklore Society in 1946 in Santo Domingo.

Jeannette Miller is a writer, poet, narrator essayist and art historian of Dominican art. She was awarded the National Literature prize from her country in 2011.
