Marti J. Anderson is an American researcher based in New Zealand. Her ecological statistical works is interdisciplinary, from marine biology and ecology to mathematical and applied statistics. Her core areas of research and expertise are: community ecology, biodiversity, multivariate analysis, resampling methods, experimental designs, and statistical models of species abundances. She is a Distinguished Professor in the New Zealand Institute for Advanced Study at Massey University [1] and also the Director of the New Zealand research and software-development company, PRIMER-e (Quest Research Limited).
Marti J. Anderson completed a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Biology at Occidental College in 1991, advised by Dr Gary Martin. She then pursued a Graduate Diploma of Science (Honours) in Zoology at the University of Sydney in Australia, going on to complete a PhD in Marine Ecology supervised by Professor Antony J. Underwood (completed in 1997). Following this, she was awarded a U2000 Postdoctoral Fellowship to continue her work in marine science as part of the Centre for Ecological Impacts of Coastal Cities at the University of Sydney. During this time, she also completed a Master of Arts (MA) in Mathematical Statistics supervised by Professor John Robinson (completed in 1999).
In 1999, she began a full-time academic position as Lecturer in the Department of Statistics at the University of Auckland, rising to Associate Professor in 2007. She was appointed to a Professorial Chair in Statistics at the Institute for Information and Mathematical Sciences (IIMS) at Massey University's Albany campus in 2009. [1] She was the first woman to be appointed to a full-time Professorial position in New Zealand in any of the fields of Mathematics, Statistics or Computer Science.
She became a member of the Professoriate in the New Zealand Institute for Advanced Study (NZIAS) in 2011, and soon thereafter (2013), she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand. [2] [3] In 2015 she was awarded a James Cook Research Fellowship for work on multivariate statistical models of ecological communities. [4] She was awarded the title of Distinguished Professor by Massey University in 2018. [5]
Marti J. Anderson is also the sole Director of the New Zealand research and software-development company PRIMER-e (Quest Research Limited).
Ruth Mason was a New Zealand botanist specialising in the taxonomy and ecology of freshwater plants. She was employed at the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research for 35 years undertaking research into aquatic plants, pioneering new techniques for plant preservation and collecting over 13,000 plant specimens in the field. She was awarded life membership by the New Zealand Ecological Society.
In multivariate analysis, canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) is an ordination technique that determines axes from the response data as a unimodal combination of measured predictors. CCA is commonly used in ecology in order to extract gradients that drive the composition of ecological communities. CCA extends Correspondence Analysis (CA) with regression, in order to incorporate predictor variables.
Gillian Christine Dobbie is a New Zealand computer scientist. She is a professor at the University of Auckland and the Director of the Auckland ICT Graduate School. She is also a visiting professor at National University of Singapore and on the advisory board of the Victoria University of Wellington.
Dame Carolyn Waugh Burns is a New Zealand ecologist specialising in lakes. She is an emeritus professor at the University of Otago.
Helen Moewaka Barnes is a New Zealand academic. She is Māori, of Te Kapotai (Ngāpuhi) and Ngapuhi-nui-tonu descent, and is currently a full professor at Massey University. In 2021 she was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society Te Apārangi.
Judith Elaine Hewitt is a Finnish-New Zealand bio-statistician and soft-sediment benthic ecologist. She currently works at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, and have with an association with the University of Auckland.

Caroline Mary Saunders is a New Zealand academic, and as of 2020 is a Distinguished Professor at Lincoln University, specialising in environmental economics. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society Te Apārangi.
Karen Ann Stockin is a New Zealand academic marine ecologist, and as of 2021 is a full professor at Massey University and a Rutherford Discovery Fellow for Royal Society Te Apārangi. Her research focuses on animal welfare and the impacts of human activities on cetacean populations, including tourism effects, and persistent marine contaminants.
Priscilla M. Wehi is a New Zealand ethnobiologist and conservation biologist. As at July 2021 she is an associate professor at the University of Otago and on the first of that month officially undertook the role of director of Te Pūnaha Matatini, a centre of research excellence in complex systems and data analytics. During the COVID-19 pandemic in New Zealand Te Pūnaha Matatini scientists have developed mathematical models of the spread of the virus across the country that influence the New Zealand government's response to the outbreak. In 2021 Wehi was awarded the Hill Tinsley Medal.
Janet Mary Wilmshurst is a New Zealand palaeoecologist who works on reconstructing the ecological past. Wilmshurst has been a Fellow of the Royal Society Te Apārangi since 2015. She was president of the New Zealand Ecological Society, and currently works as principal scientist in long-term ecology at Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research focusing on recent fossil records to reconstruct and trace past ecosystem changes in response to natural disturbance.
Deirdre Hart is a New Zealand geographer, and as of 2022 is a full professor at the University of Canterbury. She uses multidisciplinary approaches to research the physical, human and biological processes and interactions in coastal environments. In 2008 she was awarded the Zonta Science Medal.
Jodie Margaret Roberta Hunter is a New Zealand academic, of Cook Island Māori descent, and is a full professor at Massey University. Hunter researches mathematics pedagogy, with a particular interest in culturally responsive teaching of mathematics to Pasifika students. She is a Rutherford Discovery Fellow and has been a Fulbright Scholar.
Renate Meyer is a New Zealand statistician, and is a full professor at the University of Auckland, specialising in gravitational wave analysis.
Catriona M. O. Macinnis-Ng is a New Zealand ecologist, and is a full professor at the University of Auckland, specialising in the effects of climate change, especially drought, on plants. She has been awarded a Rutherford Discovery Fellowship, the Roger Slack Award, and the Miriam Dell Award for Excellence in Science Mentoring.
