Jena is a city in Germany and the second largest city in Thuringia. Together with the nearby cities of Erfurt and Weimar, it forms the central metropolitan area of Thuringia with approximately 500,000 inhabitants, while the city itself has a population of about 110,000. FC Carl Zeiss Jena is a German football club based in Jena, Thuringia. Founded in 1903 it was initially associated with the company Carl Zeiss. From the 1960s to the 1980s it was one of the top-ranked clubs in East Germany, won the DDR-Oberliga and the FDGB-Pokal three times each and reached the 1981 European Cup Winners' Cup Final. Since the German reunification in 1990, the club has competed no higher than the second tier. Since the 2021–22 season, Jena is playing in the Regionalliga Nordost.

The 1981 European Cup Winners' Cup Final was a football match contested on 13 May 1981 between Dinamo Tbilisi of the Soviet Union and Carl Zeiss Jena of East Germany. It was the final game of the 1980–81 European Cup Winners' Cup, and the 21st European Cup Winners' Cup final, held at Rheinstadion in Düsseldorf, West Germany. Only 4,750 people attended the match, though some sources claim there were 9,000 people. Dinamo Tbilisi won the match 2–1 thanks to goals by Vladimir Gutsaev and Vitaly Daraselia.
