Mary Baker Shaw is a Cherokee politician who served as an at-large tribal councilor for the Cherokee Nation from 2017 to 2021.
Baker Shaw won the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council's At-Large seat in the June 3,2017 election. [1] She secured a victory with 56.77% of the vote,receiving 847 votes out of the total cast. [1] This margin was sufficient to avoid a runoff election. [1] Her closest competitors in the election were Shane Jett,who received 19.64% of the vote (293 vote) and Linda Leaf-Bolin,who finished third with 11.33% of the vote (169 votes). [1] Baker Shaw was one of nine Cherokee Nation Tribal Councilors sworn into office on August 14,2017,at a ceremony held in the Sequoyah High School gymnasium. [2] She represented Cherokee citizens living outside the tribe's jurisdictional boundaries as one of two at-large councilors alongside Wanda Hatfield. [2]
Baker Shaw co-sponsored legislation with fellow at-large councilor Julia Coates to provide glasses to at-large Cherokees who have their eyes examined at Cherokee Nation health clinics. [3] She served as chair of the Health Committee,where she addressed the issue of physician turnover. [3] She formed a subgroup that implemented solutions,resulting in a reduction in provider turnover from losing 100 out of 125 physicians in a 5-year period to less than 4% turnover. [3] Baker Shaw supported the launch of cherokeesatlarge.org to provide timely information to the at-large Cherokee population. [3] She did not run for reelection when her four-year term concluded in 2021. [3] She was succeeded by Johnny Jack Kidwell.
Chadwick "Corntassel" Smith is a Native American politician and attorney who served as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. He was first elected in 1999. Smith was re-elected to a second term as Chief in 2003 and a third term in June 2007 with 59% of the vote. He was defeated in his attempt to get elected to a fourth term in office by Bill John Baker 54% to 46% in the 2011 election and he lost again to Baker in 2015,receiving 28% of the vote. Prior to being elected Principal Chief,he worked as a lawyer for the tribe and in private practice.

Bill John Baker is a Native American politician who served as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. First elected in October 2011,Baker defeated three-term incumbent Chief Chad "Corntassel" Smith. Prior to his election as Chief,Baker served 12 years on the Cherokee Tribal Council. In 1999,Baker unsuccessfully ran for Deputy Chief of the Cherokee Nation.
Chuck Hoskin Jr. is a Cherokee Nation politician and attorney currently serving as the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation since 2019. He was re-elected to a second term in the 2023 Cherokee Nation principal chief election.

The Democratic Party retained control of the governorship in Kentucky,flipped the Wisconsin Supreme Court and held a seat on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court,gained six seats in the New Jersey General Assembly,and won back unified control of the Virginia General Assembly,while Republicans also flipped the governorship in Louisiana and narrowly retained Mississippi's governorship. The election cycle also saw Ohio voting to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution and legalize cannabis for recreational use. The results were widely seen as a success for the Democratic Party.

Other roles include being a distinguished alumna in residence at the University of Tulsa College of Law,managing attorney of Family Legacy and Wealth Counsel,PLLC,and a trustee of Oklahomans for Equality in Tulsa,Oklahoma.
