Mary E. D'Alton is an American gynecologist. She is the Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Willard C. Rappleye Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. As a result of her research,D'Alton was elected a member of the National Academy of Medicine in 2013.
D’Alton completed her M.B.B.C.h. at the National University of Ireland before moving to North American to complete a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Ottawa General Hospital,Yale New Haven Hospital,and Tufts Medical Center. [1]
D’Alton joined Columbia University in 1999 as the Virgil G. Damon Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and director of the division of Maternal Fetal Medicine. In 2005,she was appointed the director of the Obstetrical and Gynecological Service at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. [2] In these roles,she helped develop a new screening test to provide a more accurate predictor for Down Syndrome in the first trimester of pregnancy. [3]
As a result of her research,D'Alton was elected a member of the National Academy of Medicine (then referred to as the Institute of Medicine) in 2013. [4] She later earned the Seymour Milstein Distinguished Service Award as "a senior member of the medical staff at NYP/CUIMC and Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) for exceptional and long-standing service." [5] During the COVID-19 pandemic,D'Alton co-authored numerous publications on the coronavirus. [6]

Reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) is a surgical subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology that trains physicians in reproductive medicine addressing hormonal functioning as it pertains to reproduction as well as the issue of infertility. While most REI specialists primarily focus on the treatment of infertility,reproductive endocrinologists are trained to also test and treat hormonal dysfunctions in females and males outside infertility. Reproductive endocrinologists have specialty training (residency) in obstetrics and gynecology (ob-gyn) before they undergo sub-specialty training (fellowship) in REI.

Barton Cooke Hirst was an American obstetrician known for founding University of Pennsylvania's Maternity Hospital in 1892. Hirst was the chair Department of Obstetrics for 38 years until it merged with the Department of Gynecology in 1927 and he retired. He was considered an international authority on obstetrics during his lifetime and was one of the founders of the American College of Surgeons as well as the President of The Obstetrical Society of Philadelphia from 1893 to 1894.
