The Mary Library is a regional district library located in Mary, Turkmenistan. It is the largest regional library in the Mary District. [1]
Construction of the library began in February 2010. The library building was constructed by the Turkish company Sedaş Inşaat [2] in the immediate vicinity of the Palace Ruhyet as well as the head of the mosque of the Mary District. The cost of the building was $36.4 million. [3] The library officially opened on October 20, 2011 and the President of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, held the official opening ceremony. [4]
The building has a spherical shape, and is supported by 62 columns. The height of the library is 42 meters. The three-story building is designed for the storage of three million books, [5] and can manage 600 concurrent readers. The library's collection includes a book shop, nine reading rooms, internet facilities, a separate reading room for elders, an office of special departments, conference rooms, and a children's room. Under the dome of the library, which is in the form of tulip petals, is a telescope.
The Magtymguly International Prize is an award given by Turkmenistan to those who help achieve the aim of Magtymguly, an 18th-century poet; the establishment of an independent Turkmenistan. It was established on 19 May 1992 in the field of Turkmen language and literature was established. In 2008, in order to increase the authority of the prize, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow signed a decree, which approved the new composition of the relevant committee on awarding the prize. It is awarded annually.
The mass media in Turkmenistan are among the world's most tightly controlled. The press is controlled by the government, which funds nearly all newspapers. Criticism of the president is absolutely forbidden. State licensing policy effectively eliminates all outlets not reflecting official views. To avoid reprisal, domestic and foreign journalists engage in self-censorship.
