Maryland cookies were first produced by Lyons in 1956 through its Blackpool subsidiary Symbol Biscuits. [2] At the end of 1994, Lyons Biscuits was sold to Hillsdown Holdings, which in turn was acquired in 1999 by Hicks Muse Tate & Furst. HMTF split off Hillsdown's biscuit manufacturing arm into the Horizon Biscuit Company, and when HMTF bought Burton's Foods in 2000, they merged it with Horizon. [3] Maryland Cookies subsequently took on Burton's branding. In 2021 Burton’s was bought by the Ferrero Group. [4] Today Maryland is one of the UK's best selling cookies.
