Mathis Mathisen (born 4 April 1937) is a Norwegian teacher, novelist, playwright and children's writer.

Mathisen was born in Lillesand. He made his literary debut in 1965 with the novel De blanke knappene. His play Ærefrykt for livet was staged for Fjernsynsteatret in 1969. Among his children's books are Malla from 1978, Paradisøya from 1985, and Elskede Johnny from 1991. [1]

Fjernsynsteatret was a department of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) which produced plays for television broadcasting. It opened in 1960, and operated until 1990, when a major reorganisation of NRK took place.

He was awarded the Critics Prize for the year's best children's or youth's literature in 1988. [2]

The Norwegian Critics Prize for Literature is awarded by the Norwegian Literature Critics' Association and has been awarded every year since 1950. The prize is presented to a Norwegian author for a literary work as agreed to among the members of the Norwegian Literature Critics' Association. Since 1978 the Norwegian Literature Critics' Association has also awarded a prize for the best work of children's literature. In 2003 the Critics Prize for the year's best work of translation was established, and in 2012 the Critics Prize for the year's best work of nonfiction for adults was established.
