Mathoor Krishnamurthy was a Kannada writer and former Director of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bangalore. [1] He was also instrumental in establishing the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in London. [2] He was a Padma Shri awardee. [3] He died on 6 October 2011 at the age of 82. [4] [5]

Kannada Dravidian language of India

Kannada is a Dravidian language spoken predominantly by people of Karnataka in southwestern India, and by significant linguistic minorities in the states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Kerala and abroad. The language has roughly 45 million native speakers, who are called Kannadigas. Kannada is also spoken as a second and third language by over 12.9 million non-Kannada speakers in Karnataka, which adds up to 56.6 million speakers. It is one of the scheduled languages of India and the official and administrative language of the state of Karnataka.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Indian educational trust

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is an Indian educational trust. It was founded on November 7, 1938 by Dr. K. M. Munshi, with the support of Mahatma Gandhi. The trust programmes through its 119 centres in India, 7 centres abroad and 367 constituent institutions, cover "all aspects of life from the cradle to the grave and beyond – it fills a growing vacuum in modern life", as Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru observed when he first visited the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in 1950.

Belle Monappa Hegde often abbreviated as B. M. Hegde is a cardiologist, professional educator and author. He is the former Vice Chancellor of Manipal University, Co-Chairman of the TAG-VHS Diabetes Research Centre, Chennai and the chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mangalore. He has authored several books on medical practice and ethics. He is also the Editor in Chief of the medical journal, Journal of the Science of Healing Outcomes. He was awarded the Dr. B. C. Roy Award in 1999. In 2010, he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, one of India's highest civilian awards.

Mavelikkara Krishnankutty Nair was a Carnatic Mridangam player. He received his training from Palani Subramaniam Pillai among others. He received the Padma Shri from the President of India and was also the recipient of the Kerala Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. Krishnankutty Nair was also an artiste for All India Radio in Trivandrum.

Madras Kadiravelu Saroja, is an Indian classical dancer, known for her expertise, as an exponent and as a teacher, in the classical dance form of Bharatanatyam. The Government of India honored her, in 2011, with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for her services to the field of art and culture.

Cheril Krishna Menon alias C. K. Menon, is an Indian entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is the chairman and chief executive officer of Behzad Corporation, headquartered in Doha, Qatar, which has presence in many other countries. A recipient of the 2006 Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, Menon was honored again by the Government of India, in 2009, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.

Asha Devi Aryanayakam (1901-1972) was an Indian freedom fighter, educationist and gandhian. She was closely connected with Sevagram of Mahatma Gandhi and the Bhoodan movement of Vinoba Bhave. She was born in 1901 in Lahore of the erstwhile British India and the present day Pakistan to Phani Bhushan Adhikari, a professor, and Sarjubala Devi and spent her childhood in Lahore and later in Banares. She did her schooling and college studies at home and secured MA after which joined the Women's College, Benares as a member of the faculty. Later, she took up the responsibility of looking after the girls at Shantiniketan and moved to the campus where she met E. R. W. Aranyakam, a Sri Lankan who worked as the private secretary to Rabindranath Tagore and married him. The couple had two children. It was during this time, she was influenced by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and she, along with her husband, joined him in Sevagram in Wardha. Initially she worked at the Marwadi Vidyalaya but later took up the ideals of Nai Talim and worked at Hindustani Talimi Sangh. The Government of India honoured her in 1954, with the award of Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award for her contributions to the society, placing her among the first recipients of the award.

John Ralston Marr is a British Indologist, writer and a former member of faculty at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. He is known as a scholar of Carnatic music and Tamil literature and is the author of several publications including An introduction to colloquial Tamil, The Pĕriya purāṇam frieze at Tārācuram : episodes in the lives of the Tamil Śaiva saints, The eight Tamil anthologies, with special reference to Pur̲anān̲ūr̲u and Patir̲r̲uppattu and Letterature dravidiche, the last one in Italian language. His book, An introduction to Colloquial Tamil. is a prescribed text for post graduate studies in Tamil language at the School of Oriental and African Languages and he presented a paper at the Fourth International Conference Seminar of Tamil Studies at Jaffna, in 1974. He is a founder trustee of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, UK and a recipient of the 2011 Kural Peedam Award of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil, an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2009, for his contributions to Education.

Mathoor Krishnamurty is an Indian writer, scholar and the director of the Bengaluru centre of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. He has written several articles on Vedas and Upanishads and has published books including Gandhi Upanishad, a biographical account on Mohandas Gandhi, and The World Is One Family: Wisdom of the Vedas. He is a recipient of the 2008 Sir M. Visvesvaraya Shiromani Award of the Sir M. Visvesvaraya Foundation. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2009, for his contributions to Literature and Education.

Panchapakesa Jayaraman is an Indian writer, scholar, vedic priest and a former executive director of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, USA. He is a known academic in Vedic Studies and Indian philosophy. He has edited six and authored 12 books including, Subrahmaṇya Bhāratī: Bhārata sapūta, published in 1967 by Kshitija Prakāśana.

Pratury Trirumala Rao was an Indian pediatrician and a writer of medical and non-fiction literature. He was a professor of pediatrics at the Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad. He was the author of two books on pediatric medicine in English, The insulin requirements of children with diabetes mellitus maintained in good control and Pediatric Problems in Developing Countries), two books in Telugu Gāndhījītō paricayaṃ and Gadacina Rojulu) and two biographical accounts and. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1988, for his contributions to medical science. He died in 1997, survived by his daughter, Lakshmi Pratury, a US-based social worker. A yoga institute in Hyderabad, Padma Bushan DRP Tirumala Rao Institute of Yoga is named after him.

Sundaram Ramakrishnan or S. Ramakrishnan was an Indian freedom fighter and social activist. He was widely known for his leadership to spread the values of Indian Culture globally as the director-general of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and has been awarded both the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan by the Government of India for his service to the nation.

Nagindas Sanghavi is an Indian political professor, author and columnist writing in English, Hindi and Gujarati. He received Padma Shri, Indian's 4th highest civilian honour in 2019.
