Matsuda Yuriko (born 1943) is a Japanese ceramic artist. [1]
Yuriko was born in a city in Hyōgo Prefecture called Ashiya, Japan. [2] She received her B.A and graduate degree in ceramics at Kyoto City University of Arts. Her professor at the time was Kenkichi Tomimoto, who was a famous potter during post-war Japan. [3]
Matsuda Yuriko was a visiting artist in the exhibition Soaring Voices, which focused on female Japanese ceramic artists. Her work is in The Brooklyn Museum, the Yale University Art Gallery, the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas, [4] the San Antonio Museum of Art, and the University of Hawaii Art Gallery, among others.
Soaring voices was a moving exhibition that traveled from Japan, France, and to North America. [5] It primarily focused on ceramic works made by female Japanese artists, which included Matsuda Yuriko. The exhibition was a response towards Japan's history of masculine ceramic arts. This is why the works made by the women in this exhibition include nature motifs as well as concepts of light and shadow. [6]
Matsuda’s work is often centered on female body shapes, painted with bright colors, and hand-built. Her forms are irregular and playful, often dealing with themes of parody and exaggeration. Her works range from ceramic feet, teapots mounted with bananas, irregular vessels decorated with eggplants, ceramic buttocks, bell pepper forms, and roller skates, all handcrafted and colorfully painted. [7] Her work shares elements with Dadaism, sharing playful elements with Man Ray and Elsa Schiaparelli. It often depicts decorations in red enamel with gold kinrande detailing, in the style of Imari porcelain export wares. [8] Matsuda’s work subverts the traditional Japanese uses of colored glazes and gold patterning by applying them to a pair of porcelain feet, mounted on wooden blocks. [9] Her work is not designed for strict functionality. Rather, they diverge from witty cultural commentary to self-expression.
This break from tradition may be linked to the exclusion of women from the ceramic arts in Japan. [10] Despite Japan’s long history of ceramic arts, Matsuda’s work may be read as springing from post-war alternatives and away from Japan's traditional, masculine forms and its androcentric apprentice system. [11] As women studied ceramics in universities, they broke from the traditional apprentice system, which primarily focused on functional vessels. However, women were still relegated to the outskirts of ceramic production, such as adding decorations and glazes. In extreme cases, other women couldn't fathom to use a kiln, but rather be seen as a support beam for their male counterparts. [12] Before and during World War II, Women remained on the periphery of the ceramic world until the further development of post-war materials and the increasingly common education from universities as well as normalized appearance of gas and electric kiln. [13] After World War II, Japanese ceramic work shifted in more sculptural, experimental, and expressive directions.
Peter Voulkos was an American artist of Greek descent. He is known for his abstract expressionist ceramic sculptures, which crossed the traditional divide between ceramic crafts and fine art. He established the ceramics department at the Los Angeles County Art Institute and at UC Berkeley.
Dame Lucie Rie, was an Austrian-born, independent, British studio potter working in a time when most ceramicists were male. She is known for her extensive technical knowledge, her meticulously detailed experimentation with glazes and with firing and her unusual decorative techniques.
Joan Takayama-Ogawa, is an American ceramic artist and educator. She is sansei (third-generation) Japanese-American, and a professor at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, California. Takayama-Ogawa's heritage since the 15th century of Japanese ceramic art influences her work, that usually explores beauty, decoration, ornamentation and narrative while also introducing a dialogue that rejects the traditional role of women in Japanese culture. Her most recent work addresses issues like climate change.

Kitamura Junko is a Japanese ceramic artist. Examples of her work are in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Brooklyn Museum, the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian. She has won prizes for her work from the Siga Prefecture Art Exhibition in 1983, the Kyoto Art and Crafts Exhibition in 1984 and 1985, and the World Triennial Exhibition of Small Ceramics in Zagreb, Croatia in 1997. Kitamura completed her MFA at the Kyoto City University of Art. She is married to artist Yo Akiyama, and was the student of two prominent Japanese artists: Suzuki Osamu and Kondo Yutaka.
Yoshimi Futamura is a Japanese ceramic artist who has worked and lived in France since 1986. She was born in 1959, in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture.
Monica E. Rudquist is a ceramic artist working out of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is known for her distinctive "spiraling shapes" and works primarily in porcelain. In addition, her work features wheel-thrown functional wares as well as large-scale, abstract wall installations.

Richard Shaw is an American ceramicist and professor known for his trompe-l'œil style. A term often associated with paintings, referring to the illusion that a two-dimensional surface is three-dimensional. In Shaw's work, it refers to his replication of everyday objects in porcelain. He then glazes these components and groups them in unexpected and even jarring combinations. Interested in how objects can reflect a person or identity, Shaw poses questions regarding the relationship between appearances and reality.

Nan Bangs McKinnell (1913–2012) was an American ceramicist and educator. Nan was a founding member of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, a member of the American Craft Council College of Fellows, along with receiving several awards for her work. James "Jim" McKinnell (1919–2005), her spouse, was also a ceramicist and they made some collaborative work.
Nancy Selvin is an American sculptor, recognized for ceramic works and tableaux that explore the vessel form and balance an interplay of materials, minimal forms, and expressive processes. She emerged in the late 1960s among a "second generation" of Bay Area ceramic artists who followed the California Clay Movement and continued to challenge ceramic traditions involving expression, form and function, and an art-world that placed the medium outside its established hierarchy. Her work has been exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Denver Art Museum, Daum Museum of Contemporary Art and Kohler Arts Center, and belongs to the public art collections of LACMA, the Smithsonian Institution, Oakland Museum of California, and Crocker Art Museum, among others. Critic David Roth has written, "Selvin's position in the top rank of ceramic artists has come through a process of rigorous self-examination … what differentiates [her] is that she eschews realism and functionality, indicating a level of intellectual engagement not always found among ceramicists." Writer and curator Jo Lauria described Selvin's tableaux as "elegiac and stylistically unified" works that serve as "forceful essays on the relationship between realism and abstraction, object and subject, decoration and use." Selvin lives and works in the Berkeley, California area.
Ron Meyers is an American studio potter and ceramics teacher known for producing functional pottery featuring animal and human forms. His work is featured in numerous museums and notable collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Georgia Museum of Art, and the Rosenfield Collection, and he has presented more than 100 workshops in the US and internationally. He has been described as "one of his generation's most important potters" and "an icon of the American ceramics community."
Jennifer Elizabeth Lee is a Scottish ceramic artist with an international reputation. Lee's distinctive pots are hand built using traditional pinch and coil methods. She has developed a method of colouring the pots by mixing metallic oxides into the clay before making. Her work is held in over forty museums and public collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. In 2018 Lee won the Loewe Craft Prize, an award initiated by Jonathan Anderson in 2017. The prize was presented to her at an awards ceremony at The Design Museum in London.
