Matt Boesenberg is an actor born in Sydney, Australia. He has many credits in film, television and theatre. Matt is best known for Busman's Holiday (2020) and two seasons of the Underbelly television series ( Underbelly: Razor and Underbelly: Squizzy ). Matt is a skilled sportsman and has played representative cricket in Australia and England.
Boesenberg's career began in the theatre, with his first role in the Sydney-based PACT Centre for Emerging Artists production Madagaskar Lily. [1] He then moved on to the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) where he developed a passion for Shakespeare. He played the role of Banquo in Macbeth , and Ulysses in Troilus and Cressida . He was soon awarded a scholarship by the ATYP for his outstanding work and chose to travel to New York. [2]
On moving to New York from Australia in 1999, Boesenberg studied with the Atlantic Theater Company (a school started by David Mamet and William H. Macy). [3] With renewed skills and vigour Boesenberg returned to the ATYP for their commissioned work with Nick Enright, called Spurboard. This play was performed in conjunction with the Sydney Theatre Company and went on to tour country New South Wales. [3]
Keen to expand his horizons, Boesenberg travelled to Oxford, England, to study with the British American Drama Academy. There he furthered his skills with Shakespeare under the guidance of teachers such as John Barton, Jane Lapotaire and Alan Rickman.
Upon returning to Australia, Boesenberg continued working in theatre, including roles in productions such as Rebel Tour, a fictionalised account of the South African rebel tours [4] and Prisoner of Love. [5] He also began to focus his talents on film and television.
Boesenberg has appeared in many Australian dramas including Rush , City Homicide , The Strip , Blackjack , Stingers , All Saints and Home and Away . He is well known for his roles in Satisfaction (as Dougie), and in Carla Cametti PD where he was the hired hit man Sean Hamley. [6]
Boesenberg has also had a number of roles in American productions. They include Knowing (with Nicolas Cage), The Pacific (with James Badge Dale) and Invincible (with Billy Zane). [6]
Boesenberg is best known for his work in the Australian television miniseries Underbelly: Razor , in which he portrayed notorious psychopath and standover man John "Snowy" Cutmore. [7] The series was screened on Australian television in August 2011. The premiere episode made Razor the highest rating drama in Australian history, surpassing the record set by Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities . [8] Boesenberg's performance was critically acclaimed as "spot on". [7]
In the September 2011 edition of FHM Australia , Matt appeared as the joker from The Dark Knight in a fashion shoot with a difference - cast members of Underbelly: Razor were asked to channel their inner screen killer. [9]
In 2013, Boesenberg appeared in the sixth series of Underbelly— Underbelly: Squizzy , where he starred in his reprisal of character "Snowy" Cutmore. Historically, "Snowy" Cutmore was the nemesis of Melbourne gangster Squizzy Taylor and this installment to the Underbelly franchise, set in Australia between 1915 and 1927, tells the story of Squizzy Taylor's relentless quest for power, which ultimately made him the first superstar gangster of the 20th century. Boesenberg was cast in Busman's Holiday in 2017. Directed by Austin Smithard, the film starred Jamie McShane and was filmed in 9 countries to be released in 2020 on Amazon Prime and Apple TV in the United States. [11]

Joseph Theodore Leslie "Squizzy" Taylor was an Australian gangster from Melbourne. He appeared repeatedly and sometimes prominently in Melbourne news media because of suspicions, formal accusations and some convictions related to a 1919 gang war, to his absconding from bail and hiding from the police in 1921–22, and to his involvement in a robbery where a bank manager was murdered in 1923.
Keith George Faure, from Norlane, Victoria, is an Australian career criminal, convicted of multiple murders and manslaughters. He is currently serving life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 19 years for his role in two murders related to the Melbourne gangland killings. Faure's criminal history includes further convictions for armed robbery and breaking and entering.

The first series of Australian crime television drama series Underbelly originally aired from 13 February 2008 to 7 May 2008 on the Nine Network and is loosely based on the real events of the 1995–2004 gangland war in Melbourne. It depicts the key players in Melbourne's criminal underworld, including the Carlton Crew and their rival, Carl Williams. The series is based on the book Leadbelly: Inside Australia's Underworld, by journalists John Silvester and Andrew Rule, and borrows its name from the successful Underbelly true crime anthology book series also authored by Silvester and Rule. An alternative and significantly updated tie-in novel, Underbelly: The Gangland War, was released as their 13th book in the series. The series is produced by the Australian Film Finance Corporation, in association with Film Victoria. The executive producers are Des Monaghan and Jo Horsburgh.

It is a thirteen-part series detailing real events that occurred in Sydney between 1927 and 1936. The series depicts the "razor gangs" who controlled the city's underworld during the era and the violent war between the two "vice queen" powers, Tilly Devine and Kate Leigh. It is also the last season in the Underbelly franchise that contains 13 episodes. In contrast to the previous Underbelly instalments, which were based on books by John Silvester and Andrew Rule, Razor is based on the Ned Kelly Award-winning book of the same name, written by Larry Writer.

It is an eight-part series based on the life and career of notorious Melbourne gangster, Squizzy Taylor, and is set between 1915 and 1927. It premiered on 28 July 2013. The series began its production in late 2012, with filming commencing towards the end of 2012. It is the second series in the franchise after Badness not to have 13 episodes and the first series to be fully set in Melbourne since Underbelly.

John Daniel 'Snowy' Cutmore, was a notorious and brutal Australian criminal, well known in the criminal underworld of both Melbourne and Sydney during the inter-war years until his violent death in 1927. Cutmore was raised in inner-city Melbourne and was a prominent member of the Fitzroy Push, a lawless gang involved in prostitution, sly-grog and violence. Throughout his criminal career Cutmore displayed a willingness to relocate to another state to evade police attention, often travelling between Melbourne and Sydney. For a short period from late 1926 he was a member of Norman Bruhn's criminal gang in Sydney, attributed as Australia's first 'razor gang' at the beginning of a period of gang violence in Sydney in the late-1920s known as the 'razor gang wars'. Cutmore was shot and killed in his mother's home in Carlton in October 1927, in an underworld gunfight that also resulted in the death of his rival, 'Squizzy' Taylor.
